Restraining orders - advice please

Does anyone know how restraining orders work? Apparantly the probation service want me to agree to ex-h having a restraining order instead of going back for court next week where - they say - he'd probably get a community order or similar. I've been told that these orders are only for a set amount of time. What happens when this time is up and what happens if ex-h contacts us within this time? I really don't know what to think and can't talk to my solicitor until morning. Would be grateful for any advice.
