Do you ever drink alone?

I don't mean sinking a bottle of vodka a night (although I guess that too) but do you have a glass of wine or two once the DC(s) are in bed? Or do you abstain completely when on your own?

And how old are your DC(s) roughly? Babies, toddlers, school age, teens?

DC are 5 and 7 and hell yeah!

I’m nodding off after a couple of glasses of wine so that’s my limit but I don’t see a problem with it. I never drink to incapacity anyway, alone or not, and even if someone else were here we’d probably have a drink together anyway so what’s the difference? Not ever night obviously but a Friday night alone with no wine is a bit miserable for me.

I'll be honest I'm not a lone parent but I would happily have a couple of glasses of wine when my DP is working on a late shift. I don't think I'd ever get drunk in sole charge of ds but I've no issues with a couple/few drinks. I'm afraid I do a bit of an eye roll when I hear people saying that they haven't had a drink since their dc were born "just in case".

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 29/05/2019 20:02

Oh forgot, my ds is nearly 4.

I have a toddler and I’ll have 1 or 2 glasses by myself; not every day though

Freyasmum1 · 29/05/2019 20:10

I know I don't drive anyway and have brilliant public transport and taxis come in minutes, so that "what if you had to drive to the hospital?" Doesn't apply to my situation at all. I always have taxi fare.

Teens and yes.

Not a lone parent but husband might go away for a weekend and i do then, have 1 toddler, only have a drink at the weekend

limpbizkit · 29/05/2019 20:15

I did. But I had a drink problem. Sober and happy now. But there are many people who drink alone and don't consider it a problem.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 29/05/2019 20:16

Ds is 5 and just gone to bed, I'm having a glass of wine as it was the last bit in the bottle left over from bank hol!

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 29/05/2019 20:17

I have been a lone parent since DS was 4.5 (he's now 11) and have always had a drink or two in the evening if I fancied one. Never to the point of drunkeness, of course.
I didn't have car until a couple of years ago but live in large town with good taxi service and public transport so, like you, the whole "how would you get to the hospital in an emergency?" was not dependent on my not drinking.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 29/05/2019 20:17

Yep. Currently on my 2nd gin of the night.

DD is 9. When she was younger I wouldn’t or would have 1 cider or something so I could drive if I needed to.

Frequently

Mummyamy123 · 29/05/2019 20:22

Mine are 3 and 5 and I have wine in my hand now they’re in bed!!

Villanellesproudmum · 29/05/2019 20:26

Yes, although not drunk, dd is a teen.

Lonecatwithkitten · 30/05/2019 08:40

No been then I have only ever been a small volume social drinker. On my own I'd rather have a cup of tea and a nice biscuit or piece of chocolate.

NooNooMummy · 31/05/2019 08:55

No. In the first few months after split, I'd have a glass or two on a weekend eve and looked forward to winding down with a drink. But it's not much fun drinking on your own and I gradually stopped bothering. I rarely drink these days.

My alcohol tolerance level is ridiculously low these days - if I do have a drink when I'm with other grown ups, I'm that embarrassing women who obviously doesn't get out much and gets drunk on one glass of wine!

DaydreamInBlue · 31/05/2019 17:23

Yep.
Though often virtually not alone. I’ll have an hour or 2 Skype or call with a friend and we will both have a glass of wine. Have a good chat and/or watch a tv program together.
Life means my friends are scattered around the country and around the world. It’s hard enough meeting face to face even if I wasn’t a lone parent.
TBH, being a lone parent has taken so much away from me compared to where I wanted to be, I’m not going to martyr myself further by not having a drink once in a while just because I’m a LP.

OhMsBeliever · 31/05/2019 17:30

Mine are mostly teens now. I drink occasionally at home, only one or two glasses probably a few times a month.

They've got to this age and never needed hospital in the evening (touching lots of wood now, ha!)

I've only just got a car anyway, so would have had to have called a taxi, or ask a neighbour etc.

Dandelion1993 · 31/05/2019 17:30

My DH works away a lot and once children are in bed I'd don't see the harm in the odd glass of wine, especially in the summer when I can sit outside.

summerbreeze912 · 31/05/2019 19:36

@DaydreamInBlue I love this! Now going to be doing this with my friend in aus Smilegreat idea for a lonely Saturday night!

IzzyD83 · 08/06/2019 21:54

I usually have 1 glass or can every now and again..prob monthly... but tonight I feel pretty fed up and have had 2 cans lol

I have cash in my purse to get a taxi if I need to.
