Band A council housing waiting list

Hello newbie here, I hope this is the right category.

Me and my 12 month old daughter are currently on the waiting list for a council property, we have been awarded band A as I fled a violent relationship, me and my daughter are currently staying at my parent’s house on the sofa, to make things worse my parents want us out in 5 weeks as the house is very overcrowded. We had a home visit 2 weeks ago and they have agreed to put us in temporary accommodation in 5 weeks time (which the housing officer said it will be a 1 bedroom flat) until we have a successful bid on a 2 bedroom property.

I have made 3 bids on houses this week and I'm really hoping we get one. How long will it take for me to get a property on band A?

Make sure you bid on houses with 2 bedrooms. Don't waste bids on 3 bed houses.

Also, vary the areas....dont be too fussy. They see that you're being picky and assume you're not that desperate. 2 bed flats will also have a higher chance than houses.

depends where you live. my council wont eeven let you bid on houses unless you live in one already (sleeping on the sofa wouldnt count needs to be your tenancy) everywhere is very different best to ask your council what the average waiting times are

If you going to put in a temporary property your be biding automatically. Meaning they will bid for you on properties you may or may not want. Check with your Council ASAP,

TheQueef · 06/11/2018 09:03

It depends on local authority and housing stock.

If you bid on the website you should be able to see historic lets so can work out roughly the wait.

TwistedStitch · 06/11/2018 09:03

Depends on your area. In mine you would likely be housed with 2 or 3 weeks with Band A as long as you bid on all suitable properties. What position are you coming in at the moment?

Teddingtonmum1 · 06/11/2018 17:48

Really depends on what LA you live in, also check as once your in temp accommodation they may reduce your band back down to a c as tecnically you've been housed. Check that the banding isnt time limited as someone said if you say only bid on houses the LA may start bidding for you . Be sure if you can to go take a look at what your intending to bid on, as if you get offered and then dont take it they again can reduce you band back down, most people dont sit in band A until they find what they want they have to bid on whatever is availble as they are deemed in urgent need of housing good luck ! .

Thank you for all your responses, my council allows me to bid (only 2 bedroom property’s) myself. I’m bidding on whatever’s available, this week I was really lucky as 8 houses and 1 flat was advertised, so I Bidded on 2 house and a flat which only has 84 bids on. Unfortunately I can’t see the position I’m coming in, but my housing officer said on Thursday she can roughly tell me.
This is my first time bidding this week as I had to go through an appeal as they got my details wrong, but luckily my council has backdated my application date so it says I’ve been on band A for 2 months.
As I’m waiting for temporary accommodation am I more likely to get offered a property in this bidding cycle?

no one can tell you. just wait on the list. im sure you will get a place soon.

dontalltalkatonce · 06/11/2018 20:06

It's totally region dependent. Best of luck!

Starlight345 · 06/11/2018 21:33

Yes it depends on area .

Good luck

anothermansmother · 10/11/2018 22:44

Good luck, as others have said it can vary. I waited 2 years bidding every week and eventually got a house ( which I now own).
I had the same circumstances as you and ended up in temporary accommodation for a year as family couldn't have me and ds there any longer. ( far too many in one house)

alliebob · 12/11/2018 10:06

Hello, I finally found out that I wasn't 50th-60th position. So I'm in for a very long wait, but. Thank you for all you responses they have really helped x
