Age appropriately, depends whether newly absent or absent for a while. We have been just us since birth so I just confirmed she has a dad like everyone (minus sperm donor etc kind of situations) but that her dad just wasn't ready to be a dad. That he got scared and it was ok to feel that way, because when I was pregnant I was scared too as i had never been a mummy before. You dont need to go into too much detail. I found photos helpful.
