Can I claim income support for the last 6 weeks of maternity leave?

I am taking 45 weeks of maternity leave in total, have taken 40 weeks so far. I am only entitled to 39 weeks working tax credits so now have no income until I return to work in 5 weeks. Can I claim income support for that period? I'm a single parent. Thanks in advance

Posting because I'm interested in a definitive answer.

I was under the impression that you can't, because you are classed as employed.

If you cannot make ends meet, can you bring your return to work date forward?

Hi Rancid, I've just been through the income support claim on the phone - it seems that I can claim although I'm not banking on it until I get an award letter. Obviously I told them I'm employed and on maternity leave and returning to work soon, it didn't appear to be a problem. Just waiting to get through to Gingerbread support line to ask if I can get help with mortgage interest for that period as well so will let you know!
