They would like a copy of a maintenance agreement. Nothing has been formally arranged, can I just write one up both sign it and send it as proof or will that not count?

Yes that's what we did and it was fine.

I just sent bank statements with maintenance payments highlighted, and a note saying it was a private/informal arrangement. That was fine
