My friend has recently split from her other half and has had a lot of trouble with him, he has trashed her house, threatened her, tried to get kids in car while drunk (didn't manage it but then drove off and totalled car.)

Anyway after a nasty xmas dealing with him he has now said that he washes his hands of if it all Including his two kids! DS aged 3 and DD aged 7 [angry

My friend has managed to sort out the practilities of this ie help with kids while she is working, and is relieved as he was getting more and more volatile (has told her he has taken up smoking grass everynight).

But how does she explain it to the kids?? Little boy is acting up as it is since the split, which I have told her is normal, he will settle down.

Has anyone else had to explain to thier kids why they won't be seeing their dad?

When I was a child my parents split up and my dad would occassionally get in touch, completely irratically. I think I would rather have known that he wouldn't be around then constantly wondering when I'd hear from him next. I was 7 btw. Needless to say I haven't spoken to him for years now and have 'issues' with thinking that people I love will leave. I would have been happier to write him off, it's what I chose to do in adulthood.

Yes the father's behaviour recently has been quite shocking which is why my friend is relieved in a way, but he has been changing his mind and been 'all over the place' since the split with regards to the kids.

Thanks all, I agree it would be better if he either saw them or didn't, just hope they can all get thru it .
