Can I save up a deposit for a house whilst renting and getting some housing benefit help?

I'd like the security of home owning in the future. Last few years I've enjoyed the freedom of renting but am now considering starting to save up a deposit for a house.

Am worried though as I currently get some housing benefit help with my rent. Are savings taken into account when claiming housing benefit?

Has anyone else on here been in this situation and do you have any advice? It might be a pipedream but am considering my options.

You get up to £6000 in savings before housing benefit takes it into account I believe! Which is a bit shit really if you're trying to save a house deposit up and get off the benefit! Catch 22

Ah that's a bit more than I thought it might be but yep it's frustrating isn't it. Fortunately I live in an area with very low house prices compared to national average, I don't know how people down south on a low wage would manage it?!
