I am thinking about moving closer to my job (about 25miles) yet my ex the boys dad says he will not let me take them anywhere. He sees them for 12 hrs a week over 3 days and does not pay maintenance. He doesn't drive and ive even said I'll bring them over every weekend as I'll want to see family etc.

Can he stop me?

Nope he can't stop you. Ignore him and get onto CMS.

I moved about the same distance, and no, despite what he thinks/ says he can't stop you.

Not sure if he can get a prohibition steps order to stop you moving. My ex has said he will do this if I ever try to move. Not bothered to look into it though, as I have no intention of moving anyway.

I wouldn't be thinking about it if he had kids more regularly but at the min some days it costs more in child care than I earn

No, he can't stop you. He could in theory apply for a prohibitive steps order but there's no way the court would grant it unless you were moving with the purpose of removing his children for him. Crack on, and good luck!

25miles wouldn't be far enough for a court to consider it a problem.
Especially as you have said you will do all the travel required to ensure the same level of current contact is maintained.
