Thanks toothbrushthief - I would have missed that article. It expressed very clearly a lot of ideas that I struggle to put into words and sometimes wonder if I'm a bit over the top in believing. It's nice to see I'm not the only one that feels that way!

I heard on Who Do You Think You Are last night (the JK Rowling one) that 30% of children born in Paris in the late 1800's were born to single mothers. And most of them were domestic servants. The nuclear family thing is an ideal that only ever came close to being realised in the mid-twentieth century.
