Increased home insurance premiums for lone parents

I have just renewed my policy and found out that since OH died (and DD2 born), I have to pay about £4.00 extra per month in contents insurance.

Apparently this is because a) I now have more than one child so more likely to be damage b) I am now a lone adult in the house, so house is now less secure

I hadn't even considered this might be an issue.

Just letting you all know in case this is something you might need to consider. I expect you are all a bit more savvy than me, so will be aware of this.

That's crap and totally illogical. A burglar wouldn't know if there were 2 adults in the house. I wonder if there was another woman in the house, would the same apply? Or it just blatant sexism?

When I renewed mt car insurance after separating from xh with Directline they told me my premiums would go up because my spouse was removed from the policy. So I said leave him on then (altho it rankled) but they wouldn't cos no longer at same address.

They could offer absolutely no logical reason for this. But you would think with the car being used less there'd be less risk of accident? Apparently not in their parrallel universe.

The man on the end of the phone tried to explain it by saying with two people living in the house, it was less likely to be empty at any one point.

So do they put up the premium if both parents are working full time then? I bet not.

I feel a complaint letter coming on.

It's just an excuse to get more money from you...keep complaining.
