Obviously she's not a lone parent and hasn't been now for a long time, but remember that excellent article that she wrote a while ago?. It was really positive about single parents, and busted a couple of the nastier myths perpetuated by media.

it seems to me that david cameron is reintroducing a STIGMA in to being a single parent. Most people are single parents because of circumstances they couldn't control. Most single parents are in their 30s. MOST of them, despite all the obstacles and the cost of childcare STILL work and so therefore, oh holy grail, pay tax!

But DC is practically encouraging people to look down on single parents. Making it acceptable for them to suffer another financial blow...

And his talk about what is fair..... Angry grr

Can't believe he signed up to gingerbread.

I hope Gingerbread are going to make a statement or something..............

Here's a chunk of JK Rowling's article

"Here are just a few of the facts that sometimes get lost on the way to an easy story, or a glib stump speech: only 13 per cent of single parents are under 25 years old, the average age being 36.

Fifty-two per cent live below the breadline and 26 per cent in ?non-decent? housing. Single-parent families are more likely than couple families to have a member with a disability, which gives some idea of the strains that cause family break up.

In spite of all the obstacles, 56.3 per cent of lone parents are in paid employment."

Wow, single parents are great. We are doing such a tough job and everybody ECEPT the tories knows that.

I read that article when it first came out and it made me cry. I agree about the reintroduction of the STIGMA. I was bought up by a single parent a long time ago and remember what that used to be like. Even school teachers made comments about your background in those days. We were treated like dirt despite my mother working long hours and being an excellent parent at the same time. I shudder at the thought of those days returning.

JK are you out there people need your help.

Maybe JK could get together with gingerbread and they could make a joint statement.... we don't deserve stigma.

I left my x for my children. It was scary but I did it because I have BALLS. If anybody deserves a stigma it's my x because he won't pay child maintenance. (not to mention the fact that he was emotionally, verbally and financially abusive). If I were still with him now he'd be delighted that I was going to lose CA and he'd get a bit of extra tax credit.
