Hello! I am an A-level geography student who is carrying out an investigation as to how the Truman Brewery has impacted Brick Lane. I am focusing on aspects such as if the Truman Brewery has impacted gentrification in the area, how it has impacted social and economic processes such as community and employment, as well as the quality of the local environment. In particular, I am researching how Brick Lane changes from the Truman Brewery and Shoreditch area in the north, to the White Chapel/Banglatown area in the south.
If anyone lives in Brick Lane, travels there frequently e.g. for work, or knows anyone who does, please leave some comments below! It would be a great help, and of course everything included would be anonymous.
Note: In my study, I am defining gentrification as the process whereby the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in, improving housing, and attracting new businesses, often displacing current inhabitants in the process.
Some prompts to help:
Do you prefer eating the more 'traditional' cultural foods of Brick Lane such as curry and bagels? Or at the Truman Brewery?
Have you heard of the Truman Brewery? Do you visit the Truman Brewery often?
What do you think about the change of Brick Lane into a 'trendy' place for younger people?
Do you feel there is a separation between the new vs old Brick Lane community?
Are you aware of the proposed redevelopment of the Truman Brewery? Do you oppose it?
But anything would be amazing.
It would help if you could specify your relation to Brick Lane? e.g. live there, work there, know someone who does.
