Restaurant for 14th birthday girl, family celebration?

I live in East London and you'd think I'd know where to eat out...however, living here I also don't have a lot of spare cash to get out and do this :)

It's my daughter's 14th and we are going out altogether with family, inc one brother 13 years old.

We're all a bit stumped on where to go and it's being booked late because she originally wanted to do something different, but has settled on:

'dinner in a fancy restaurant where I can wear a nice top'

She doesn't really get to dress up and isn't into make up yet, but I can sense it's all about to change :)
She likes all food, but said she doesn't want a burger place or vegan restaurant. Last year we went to Gloria Trattoria and she had a lot of fun, but it was a bit squashed in for us all.

Can any fellow Londoners or city visitors recommend a sort of mix of good food and either good vibes / views atmosphere they have experienced recently?

To be honest, I think she would rate good food and being made to feel special more highly than views etc, but I find it hard to know where offers really great service from a lot of reviews?

Notes:

  • Budget - we aren't too worried as it's a special occasion but I feel like it has to be worth it.
  • We want to avoid Soho because her birthday coincides with Pride - we love to see it and have been before, but access can be tricky.

Very open to suggestions, excuse if this kind of question has been asked before, but I think a lot of new places pop up or old places go down hill, so I would love to know any thoughts!

Thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to reply!

Please don't come for me with the 'you're booking this too late!' - we've just moved house/had an operation/she changed her mind etcetcetc so it's just slipped through this time. xx

What sort of food does she like?

Lacacahuete · 21/06/2024 15:30

@longdistanceclaraclara she loves everything apart from vegan or all-vegetable food really. She is Chinese heritage so gets to have a lot of good Chinese food with family, but is still open to that.

You might get more answers in Chat.

Do you want fancy like The Savoy Grill, Sketch, Bob Bob Ricard, Dinner or more low key?

Duck and Waffle for the view?

Somewhere quirky like Champor Champor or Bodega Negra?

Lacacahuete · 21/06/2024 15:48

@BobandRobertaSmith good point. I might repost there! I think BobBob is over 15s, will have a look at the others, thank you for the suggestions

Clos Maggiore, Sarastro, the Wolsey, quaglinos, Inca, jungla

BobandRobertaSmith · 21/06/2024 16:40

Quaglinos has live music at weekends. Last time I went, there were a lot of dressed to the nines 20 something diners (although it was quite late on a Saturday night) amongst the usual dressed down Londoners. Not my favourite but it would probably feel very fancy grown up to a 14 year old as in 20 something grown up rather than fancy grown up in a middle aged way like The Savoy Grill 😂

QueenofTheBorg · 21/06/2024 16:45

What about The Delaunay?

londonmummy1966 · 21/06/2024 16:59

Afternoon tea at Fortnum and Mason? The tea room at the top of the building is very fancy.

Lacacahuete · 21/06/2024 17:02

@BobandRobertaSmith I totally understand what you mean 😆 She is fascinated by 20 year olds and their make up/fits. So I can imagine going to a fancy place and seeing all that exciting. God, I'm going to have to make an effort too, I forgot about that.

@londonmummy1966 Yes I would love to take her for afternoon tea, but she really wants dinner this time round! thanks for the suggestion though, got it on the list for myself one day.

Seabird? Far enough away from Soho that it won't be too mobbed for Pride.

Lacacahuete · 21/06/2024 17:05

Thanks all - all good suggestions. I've decided with my partner that I'm going to book 3-4 that have availability and then tell her to pick! Then cancel the others - not something I like doing but I can't see another way at this point.
She is having a sleepover tonight so appreciate all the ideas before I speak to her tomorrow :)

@CleanShirt thanks - just looked at Seabird that's a good shout, though it's booked up. One for next time!

The Big Mama chain has a few - all very fun and make it feel like an occasion - instagramable and popular with this age group :)

Lacacahuete · 21/06/2024 17:27

@User1974 We went to Gloria for 13th and enjoyed it! I will see what they've got for dinner service. thanks!

The Wolsley and The Delaunay are great shouts; they feel grand.

Forza Wine at the National Theatre has nice river views (make sure you book the terrace or the river windows) and lots of "small plate" which can be great for teens or annoying, depending on your view.

It's brutally expensive, but Decimo at the Standard would be a showstopping option for teens: tenth floor views, lovely boujee surroundings (sort of 70s art deco), tasty mexican ish food with something for everyone, fancy mocktails.

This is what I was going to suggest!

Either of these perhaps:

I love the Wolsley/Delaunay etc and they are very smart/grand but if she likes the glamour of dressing up there aren’t very many places that attract the glammed up young crowd rather than dressed up for an occasion old fogeys (😂 anyone over 25) that are suitable for a teen. Sketch, Quaglinos, the Shard restaurants, maybe Brasserie of Light, Bob Bob Ricard.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 21/06/2024 21:38

I no rate the Dickens Inn in St Katherine's dock for location and value for money.

It's not fine dining but for age 14 I would have thought it was very acceptable.
