Unexpectedly good west end shows

Tell me what show you've seen on stage that you found unexpectedly enjoyable.

Play or musical.

I'm after last minute tickets to a show where I've found myself suddenly child free.

standing at the skies edge is on at the moment and v good

Fightingtalk · 24/04/2024 21:25

Operation Mincemeat, The Motive and the Cue and The Hills of California.

Kattya · 24/04/2024 21:29

Book of Mormon. I wasn’t expecting it at all!

Ahwig · 24/04/2024 21:33

Mrs Doubtfire the musical absolutely brilliant.

IamChipmunk · 24/04/2024 21:34

Agree @Ahwig really enjoyed it! Very well done and true to the film.

Don't bother with Matilda. Hated it!

SummaLuvin · 24/04/2024 21:35

Saw Hadestown in New York a couple of years ago, I heard it was good and nominated for Tonys... but I like to go into musicals pretty blind so didn't read up too much and I was blown away. It's in London now and I really want to go and see it there.

RollOnSpringDays · 24/04/2024 21:37

The Time Traveller’s Wife.

SummaLuvin · 24/04/2024 21:38

I saw the Stranger Things play and was slightly concerned it was going to be a money grab with no substance. I was wrong, it was phenomenal.

TeenLifeMum · 24/04/2024 21:40

Love Matilda and I’ve seen it 3 times. Not sure what’s to hate. First time I thought we were seeing Shakespeare as it was Stratford upon Avon and the RSC so I went in expecting very little but was blown away.

Book of Mormon was great. Written by Southpark creators. And a friend recently saw come from away and said it was unexpectedly brilliant (story of all the passengers of grounded flights on sept 11 and the impact on the small town).

IamChipmunk · 25/04/2024 06:24

@TeenLifeMum I wanted it to be nearer to the book. I didn't like the additional 'story' about Matildas parents.
The actor playing Matilda also wasn't 'right' - just personal preference. It was one of my favourite books as a child and I was just really disappointed with what they had done with it!

I've seen loads of things at the theatre over the years and just found this a really poor experience.

I would 100% recommend The Picture of Dorian Grey that's on at the moment with Sarah Snook. It is an incredible production.

OneForTheRoadThen · 25/04/2024 06:42

Six was fantastic

YouBetYourBippy · 25/04/2024 06:46

Another vote for Standing at the Skys Edge - absolutely phenomenal.

Simplelobsterhat · 25/04/2024 06:50

Saw Operation Mincemeat a few weeks ago and would happily go back tomorrow if opportunity allowed - fantastic. Very funny, yet a few proper emotional parts, clever staging, some great performances. DD and I have been listening to the soundtrack ever since.

Access to better tickets if you sign up to their mailing list.

Haven't seen much else in the west end for years but saw Matilda on tour and also thought that was great, although I agree with pp that the extra stuff with parents / circus was a weak point. But would go again.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 25/04/2024 06:55

The Mousetrap. I really didn't think I would like it but I was totally engaged. I even went back and saw it again just to check it was as good as I thought.
I am a Christie fan though.

Machinal at the Old Vic. Saw it on Monday and still
not over it. It’s intense but so worth seeing.

Tristar15 · 25/04/2024 08:34

Not sure if To Kill A Mockingbird is still on but I was very sceptical about how it would translate to the stage. I was not disappointed! It is great!

Riverlee · 25/04/2024 08:35

Back to the Future- superb special effects and enjoyable show.

Choir of Man - not the longest of shows but you feel like you’re in the pub with the mates having a great night out, having a singalong etc

Riverlee · 25/04/2024 08:36

Strangers in New York - carry a cake across London

  • seeing this in the next few weeks. Got good reviews. (Not sure exact title).
GreatGateauxsby · 25/04/2024 08:37

I really liked cruel intentions…
tickets weren’t good value too

Howtonamechange · 27/04/2024 19:43

We ended up seeing back to the future.

It was PHENOMENAL.

The special effects were amazing. Highly highly recommended.

Thank you for all your recommendations xx
