Am I too snobbish if I say I don't like the outside of this maisonette?

SW London area, lovely neighbourhood and location is perfect, I just think it's looks really ugly and shabby on the outside, would I be mad to not consider it?

It looks absolutely soulless.

Overtheatlantic · 05/04/2024 13:28

I mean yes it’s not that attractive but maybe if you think of it having a war-effort vibe? And the interior is lovely!

exexpat · 05/04/2024 13:31

It looks quite well-maintained to me, so I wouldn't say shabby, but if you don't like that style of building then yes, better not to buy it. It's a bit utilitarian and boring looking.

Buying a property is always a matter of weighing up priorities: you might get a bigger, better flat in an ugly building or one further away from a station or near a busy road, but only you can decide what is important to you.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 05/04/2024 13:31

That would be £150 grand here maximum.

Lovingthegrungerevival · 05/04/2024 13:33

It's awful - kerb appeal is very important.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/04/2024 13:33

Same here. East Midlands. I like it

Comedycook · 05/04/2024 13:34

It's not shabby looking imo. It just isn't an old property with period features. Personally I like these types of properties. I live in a 1970s house. It's not particularly pretty but we have large rooms

11NigelTufnel · 05/04/2024 13:34

Loads of people on property programs say they are looking for character, so you are far from alone. You just need to decide what is most important to you. I have a characterless box as it meant I could get a lot more house for my money than the cottages down the Road. All the cottage owners prioritised character over space. Neither is wrong, jt is personal taste of thw person living there.

SoEmbarrassed2024 · 05/04/2024 13:35

Personally kerb appeal is really unimportant to me and it's the inside that matters. After all I don't sit staring at the outside of the house, I live in it

HolyParc · 05/04/2024 13:36

Perhaps it's silly but I love the kerb appeal of a period conversion flat!

Not at all. I would feel depressed every single day returning to that.

Riverlee · 05/04/2024 13:39

Houses are often purchased on gut instinct, and if you don’t like it, you don’t like it.

If I saw it, I would assume ex council flat.

Westfacing · 05/04/2024 13:40

The outside is a bit plain and uninspiring but it's not ugly, and certainly not shabby!

1990s · 05/04/2024 13:40

It has a beautiful tree and grassy outlook - could be a lot lot worse!

If you want Victorian kerb appeal you’ll pay a good few grand more….

Where is 'here'?

HullaBallu · 05/04/2024 13:41

I don't know, I'm warming up to that mid-century aesthetic more and more as I get older. Big windows, nice clean brickwork, pleasingly symmetrical...

DreadPirateRobots · 05/04/2024 13:43

I don't think it's that bad (and I do enjoy a Victorian, and live in a London one). Utilitarian, but tidy, symmetrical, decently maintained and green. But it's 100% your prerogative to decide you're prepared to pay what kerb appeal costs, or not.

Dartmoorcheffy · 05/04/2024 13:44

That's outrageously expensive. If I could afford that price I would be getting a detached 5 bedroom with loads of land in Devon.

ShrubRose · 05/04/2024 13:44

Looks like there's no cloakroom on the first floor. That alone would be a no-no for me.

Oh FFS. Yes, London prices are sooooo hiiiiiiigh. We get it. This is not a new thing or a thing that should be provoking this kind of faux surprise and outrage every time.

TedMullins · 05/04/2024 13:46

Personally I think kerb appeal is silly but I'm not you. Yes, period houses are lovely looking but have you got the budget to be that picky?

Spendonsend · 05/04/2024 13:46

Well you have to buy what you like not what others like.
I dont think it would win a design award but I think it looks neat and tidy and not shabby.

Yes, these properties are often very nice and spacious inside. I just can't get over the outside

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 05/04/2024 13:47

It's not shabby at all, looks well maintained and the grassy area is more pleasant than a busy road. A bit boring maybe but nothing out of the normal range.

The outside really doesn't matter to me as much as space inside so I'd be fine with that.

But I'm not you and if you're happy to pay loads more £££ for a quaint looking old place that might be a repair money pit and you'll see for 5 minutes a day, bash on! Grin

There is always a reply like this in these thread... Not sure how I would afford a mortgage like this whilst living in Devon given our jobs (and lives) are tied to London. I have no interest in being in Devon if not for short holidays.
