Am I too snobbish if I say I don't like the outside of this maisonette?

SW London area, lovely neighbourhood and location is perfect, I just think it's looks really ugly and shabby on the outside, would I be mad to not consider it?

If you are inside you aren't looking at the outside, you're enjoying your big windows and better sound proofing than a period property.

Whatifthehokeycokey · 05/04/2024 20:36

It's your budget! You are perfectly entitled to like or dislike whatever houses you please as long as you can find alternative ones within your price range.

nothingsforgotten · 05/04/2024 20:42

I can't see anything wrong with it. To me it is a lot more attractive than many UK houses.

Youdontevengohere · 05/04/2024 20:45

Exactly this! Assuming you can afford a property that ticks all your boxes including being a period conversion, then YANBU at all 🤷🏻‍♀️

The outside is a bit plain and uninspiring but it's not ugly, and certainly not shabby!

And the interior is amazing.

MillshakePickle · 05/04/2024 21:02

That's a fantastic find op. And in such great area! Surbiton is also having g a bit or resurgence in popularity atm. I'd at least go and have a look. I don't think it'll be on the market for long

fluffi · 05/04/2024 21:24

Can't see anything wrong with the outside, grass, tree, set back from the road a bit and space around it.

Femmefatality · 06/04/2024 07:01

@HolyParc

I personally would not buy that type of property in that part of London, unless it was heavily discounted.

For whatever reason, certain demographics of house buying London have a huge preference and bias for Period property, with many not prepared to consider anything else. Given how unstable the market is likely to be for the next few years, this would put me off buying anything that I feel may be difficult to sell (unless I was certain it was my forever home).

RuthW · 06/04/2024 07:14

It's lovely. Outside is fine. Looks like a normal home.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/04/2024 07:19

It's tidy and well maintained outside, has communal garden and off street parking in a residents' parking area. It's central and near the river, less than 10 minutes from the station (15 mins to Waterloo).

That's apart from a well laid out and spacious interior which has been well presented and won't need much spent on it.

The council tax band is low and the service charge reasonable.

It would let very well if circumstances were to change.

For all of the above the price is very fair for Surbiton. If @HolyParc you have another £100-£150k and/or can compromise on location there will be similar properties more prettily packaged. Otherwise I think you have found the moon on a stick but if you can't compromise I am sure someone else will snap it up.

distinctpossibility · 06/04/2024 07:28

I think it looks great. Yeah the outside doesn't have the same wow factor as some (though it certainly isn't shabby!!) but if you're living in it you'll be inside... I have a house that's actually anti-wow factor (horrible road, not great exterior) and adore living here because it meets our needs so well and, crucially, we couldn't have afforded the space and location we needed AND kerb appeal so something had to give.

SiriAlexa · 06/04/2024 07:33

For that area it’s definitely worth a look. I have also lived in period conversions which haven’t been soundproofed properly and they can be awful for hearing every little noise. Sometimes purpose built flats are better for this.

abracadabra1980 · 06/04/2024 08:14

Kerb appeal is my #1 deciding factor. Looking at that exterior/street would depress me.

thankyouforthedayz · 06/04/2024 08:30

I love it. 1950s, modern, big windows, well maintained. But it's entirely personal.

FabulousWealthyTart · 06/04/2024 08:44

I think the gardens make it look quite peaceful and spacious. It looks well maintained, and I agree it looks a bit bland architecturally, but it still gives the impression of quite a nice place to live.

WhisperGold · 06/04/2024 08:46

Can someone post a listing of similar house for £150K please?

mumda · 06/04/2024 08:48

That tree is a problem. Either already or very soon.

JJathome · 06/04/2024 08:48

Bananabredd · 05/04/2024 19:34

Don't buy it. I don't think you deserve it. Leave it to someone who is going to appreciate mid-century architecture with a lovely green space and tree outside. Peace and quiet and great location.

Go and find your flat with a nice front door and I hope your neighbours have tidy windows.

Deserve it? What’s that some weird religious thing?

What in the same area? Or areas others live in?

Ugh, don't even indulge the "you could get a MANSION for that in Bumfuck Nowhere" people.

Property values are heavily based on location, who knew.

Youdontevengohere · 06/04/2024 09:03

I live in Bumfuck Nowhere and you couldn’t get a place like that here for £150k. Even in Bumfuck nowhere, it would cost you about £220k

HolyParc · 06/04/2024 12:09

@mumda how so??

OP posts:
FayCarew · 06/04/2024 12:31

It's huge. If it gets felled, the roots could create subsidence.

SwedishEdith · 06/04/2024 13:15

I'm sure one of these flats (in the first post) has just been on a repeat of Location x 3 on More 4 just now.

Startingagainandagain · 06/04/2024 13:32

I would not spend that amount of money on a rather banal leasehold flat.

And I am a Londoner by the way so used to ridiculous prices but I can still spot an overpriced home.

The way the pics have been taken is trying to make the rooms look bigger and it is likely to be much smaller in reality

Nothing exciting about living in Surbiton either.

High council tax too and service charge.

I don't think the main issue is the exterior...
