Hi all,

I’ve got my PhD graduation in a couple of weeks and want to book a nice meal for afterwards. Graduation is at Royal Festival Hall so Waterloo way but happy to tube/walk somewhere for dinner. Any inspiration on somewhere you’ve had a special meal, great food but not too stuffy? Happy with any cuisine and to spend some money as it’s a special occasion…just am not feeling very inspired on google!

Thank you!

Maybe The Archduke at Waterloo?

We went to the Ivy at Marylebone for my ds graduation.

It's v nice but they do serve you quickly.

I would go for always reliable! Brasserie Blanc has a branch on the Southbank, or the Skylon restaurant at the festival hall. Both have nice atmospheres though Skylon is a bit less intimate. Never had a duff meal at either of them. If you arrange it beforehand BB will do a birthday celebration cake with a candle.

Many congratulations on getting your PhD!

I love The Delaunay on Aldwych (walking distance at a pinch). It’s a bit tatty now but I still love it. We’ve eaten at Boulevard Brasserie in Covent Garden which was also good.

I’ve also in the past had Afternoon Tea at the Library at London Marriott Hotel County Hall which was fabulous, in case you fancy that.

Simpson on the Strand

I think it is currently closed, though apparently there are plans to re open it later this year. Shame they sold off all their fixtures and fittings!

I didn’t know that. Had a lovely, special meal there in 2019. It was only refurbished in 2017. I hope they retain its elegance and sophistication, and silver trays.

If you want a bit more lively, try one of the Big Mamma group restaurants. Jolly, trendy - a treat! - but unstuffy italian fare, located all over central.

St John, if you like the food.

Brasserie Zedel not too pricey but feels like an occasion.

Agree. They are good fun, though the lemon meringue pie defeated me! There is one just off the Strand called Ave Mario ( not a typo).
