Charlton, SE London

We live in a 2 bed flat in central London with two kids so looking to move.
We've been looking at Greenwich, Blackheath,. Charlton and have seen a house we love in Charlton.

I'm just slightly nervous because honestly I don't know the area. We've wandered around to check it out, mid week and weekends, and it's near good Primary schools. The house is very close to the village/Charlton Manor on a very 'sought after' road. Anyone reassure me that it's a nice are for raising kids and living (transport connections suit our needs for work).

Any info/reassurance appreciated.

As you will see, there is a polluted lorry filled road down the bottom of the hill, but up the top in the village area is ok. The other side of that lorry filled road has an industrial estate including pretty big shops and supermarkets.
Have you seen Jacobean Charlton House? There is a limited amount of 'socially disruptive elements' in some of the areas towards Woolwich, but mainly all is well.
The Woolwich free ferry is a treat for children because you get on without waiting if you are a foot passenger, turn round and come back, and it has been a sort of trip to the sea side.

At the Cutty Sark, there's a foot tunnel under the river.
Along Shooters Hill, there's a castle on the right then an open farm on the left, run by the people who campaigned and saved the untouched remaining ancient woodland.
Charlton village has long been the destination for those who cannot quite afford Blackheath village. (Plus, for buggy pushers and wheelchair users, Blackheath Standard and Charlton village have the bonus of level access.) Sun in Sands roundabout can get a bit overwhelmed if you time it badly, but when you are local you will know the ways round. There's an M&S in Blackheath Standard.

Woolwich itself is extraordinary. There;s a big street market, and lots of fresh ethnic food shops in the area too, but the High Street has always had the peculiarity of being stuffed with shoe shops, and even barbers and nail bars and any other business you can think of seems to have a side line of selling shoes. Taking the High street as the whole 'L' shape, the far end from the square is the Ferry. There's a swimming bath there, and there is or was another down by Maze Hill station on the 'low road'. My info on anything could be out of date, so I hope some of it is still relevant.

If you can afford west Greenwich go for it.

Charlton - well parts of it are fine.

It has rocketed in price recently.

East Greenwich up to westcombe park and a bit beyond into se3 can be lovely.

Parts of Blackheath standard and at john's are gorgeous too and a real community feel.

Blackheath - can be great.

I think you need to be careful with schools - secondary schools are an issue and noise.

Check train lines to London Bridge.

Is the house located on the charlton slopes?

If you can afford Greenwich or Blackheath I’d go there rather than Charlton. Charlton is fine but it’s unremarkable. What sort of budget do you have?

charlton central (south of the trainline, west of charlton church lane is lovely for families.
