Is Wicked the musical any good?

That really.

Dds would like to go.

I'd like to know if it's worth spending the money. It is always a bit of a hit and miss...

Seen it twice. It's my favourite

Figgygal · 03/01/2018 20:28

I'm in the minority on this I love musicals but hated wicked. It's a one song show the narrative is nonsense the staging and costumes annoyed me and I couldn't wait for it to end.

My mum dragged me to see jersey boys the same day (wicked had been the matinee) now that was a brilliant show

ElphabaTheGreen · 03/01/2018 20:28

MortalEnemy

I think the book is exactly as you describe (without the hit songs). The musical achieved what the book tried, and failed, to do.

Despite my beautiful, clever and beloved username, it isn't actually one of my top favourite musicals because of the slightly dodgy script, but the score is truly glorious. Definitely worth seeing - if nothing else, it has some great effects.

Hmmalittlefishy · 03/01/2018 20:32

I couldn't understand when I heard they were doing a musical how they would translate the book as it is quite complex and political. Lots of that is obviously missed out and it reminds me a little bit of some of the Harry Potter films where there is an assumption you have read the book or don't mind seeing only a surface story

Toomuchstuff12 · 03/01/2018 20:48

I didn't like it, however everyone I know who has seen it has loved it, just not my thing. I fell asleep during the first act so I'm maybe not the best critic.

Waterlemon · 03/01/2018 21:18

I love a musical, but I really didn’t enjoy Wicked.

It seems to have a real cult following, lots of the audience members had dressed up in green/witchy fancy dress and everyone else I know that has seen it has loved it.

We did seem to have a shoddy cast though - all the main roles where played by understudies. Dh was totally bored, although he really isn’t a fan of musicals.

I’m still undecided whether I should watch it again or not bother as there are plenty of other shoes that I would like to see instead.

IamPickleRick · 03/01/2018 21:22

The book is much more in-depth and erm, strange? The musical is amazing! Been 4 times, have seen Kerry Ellis and Adam Garcia in it and just fell in love.

Stickmangate · 03/01/2018 21:42

I've read the book but didn't really get the hype about the show. It has a big cult following and I think a cast member was leaving (a few years ago) and every time they came on people were shouting and clapping etc ruined the flow a bit as we didn't know what they were clapping for.

tracymars · 03/01/2018 21:52

I saw it in London a few years ago and I loved it and often listen to different songs at home. I had the sountrack before I saw the show so had some idea about what it would be like. The were quite a few kids in the audience and they were so excited and really enjoying it. Had to stop myself joining in with Defying Gravity

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 03/01/2018 21:54

I'm not a big fan of musicals but loved Wicked.
Great music -very likely to be stuck in your head of weeks,
and a nice story-I'd highly recommend!

SewButtons · 03/01/2018 21:58

I really liked the music and the costumes were great, the story isn’t the best but I wasn’t bored. It’s one of the cheaper shows- I often see tickets for £15 so if you can manage to find reasonably priced tickets then I’d go for it- I wouldn’t pay loads though.

Icequeen01 · 03/01/2018 21:58

I liked it and have seen it twice. My DH came with me the first time and slept all the way through it. He hated it and he usually enjoys a good musical.

Theimpossiblegirl · 03/01/2018 22:00

I've seen it with my DDs (15 and 16) twice and we're going again this year when it comes to Bristol.
They love it, it is their favourite. DH enjoyed it but it wasn't his favourite (I think Billy Elliot was).

Bin85 · 03/01/2018 22:03

I hated it
Too loud, too long and weird

buckleten · 03/01/2018 22:07

I loved it, and have booked to see it again this year! My two daughters 9 and 12 loved it too, we often sing along to the soundtrack in the car!

UrsulaPandress · 03/01/2018 22:09

I loved it and loved the story.

scrappydappydoo · 03/01/2018 22:13

We weren't impressed - saw it in London a couple of years ago. Felt a bit am dram and the sound was appalling - lots of feedback from mics/speakers Confused. Made it really hard to follow. DD is desperate to see it though so might give it another go on the UK tour.

corlan · 03/01/2018 22:17

You can get tickets priced £20/£30 and £40 at the moment as part of the 'Get into London theatre' promotion that runs every year:- gilt.seetickets.com/performance/wicked/apollo-victoria/19/app/754741.

Hellywelly10 · 03/01/2018 22:18

It's perfect to go to with teens or kids. Some great songs and in london there are some good deals on.
Basically its a character study of the wicked witch.

BubblesBuddy · 03/01/2018 22:18

42nd Street is way better. Dancing is fantastic. Also Young Frankenstein. You won’t know the songs but it’s funny! Wicked is ok for teens but not up to the standard of 42nd Street.

babigailwabble · 03/01/2018 22:19

Um is this a reverse???

YAS OMG. GO GO GO GO.

IamLucyBarton · 03/01/2018 22:22

I know 42nd street is fab. Friends raves about it. But I have a 10 and a 12 yo...

Lion king is another options but tickets are soooo eyewatering pricey.

Any other suggestions welcomed.

I love musicals but really was underwhelmed by Wicked. Too screech y and the school story really didn't fit with the wizard of oz story.
Loved loved loved Matilda and Charlie and the chocolate factory on the west end.

SorrelForbes · 03/01/2018 22:27

It was OK. Great visually and a couple of good numbers but very shouty in places. Doesn't even make my top 40.

What about Matilda?

BestIsWest · 03/01/2018 22:28

Didn’t like it sorry.
