Recently moved quite close to London and need some advice on family activities ( especially rainy day ones) we have only been to the national history museum so far witch was great! Kids are 8,6,4.
What other museums are kid friendly?

Museum of London
National Maritime Museum Greenwich
Horniman Museum Forest Hill
Science Museum
British Museum is worth seeing even if not obviously “child friendly”

What do your DC like?

British Museum is fabulous. If you're in that part of town try also the UCL museums such as the Petrie.

Wellcome Collection

British Library (permanent 'Treasures of..' free, plus ticketed special events)

Bank of England Museum (weekdays only, I think)

Somerset House

National portrait do good kids activities. Plus all of the above!

We spent most time in the British, science museums and Wallace collection when DS was little. Transport and museum of land neon when he was very little.

When just me, I'd go for coffee in the v&a or British museum members room.

Land neon??? London!!

I went to the National Army Museum recently and it was great. Free, way quieter than NHM or Science museum, and loads of hands on stuff.

Postal Museum

Best IMO are:

  • science museum (totally free, unless you go to an exhibition, and stuff for all age ranges - don't miss the Garden Room and area at the back for your 4yo)
  • London Transport Museum (again, amazing play area for younger kids)

I'd also recommend the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, the Museum of London Docklands (has soft play area your 4yo might still enjoy), the Horniman and the Wellcome Institute (better for the older child).

I love the British Museum myself but it doesn't have anything for younger children really. In summer the V & A has a great paddling pool near the cafe and that is enough for the younger children.

The Geffrye Museum www.geffrye-museum.org.uk/ in Hoxton is brilliant.

Also the Sir John Soane's Museum www.soane.org/ in Holborn. The day I visited, there were a few families with quite young DC who appeared to enjoy it!

Here's a great list of museums for children in London!

You must go see the Winnie the Pooh exhibition at the V&A if you haven't yet!
