Another teenager loses their life in a stabbing in London

The sixth this year Sad

And then the non-fatal stabbings. And those where the victim is older than teen.

It seems as if nearly every day there is news of another attack. And some of the headlines are lurid.

I've started to worry for my teens like I never had before.

Is it really a rise? Or is it a change in what is reported?
(or just me seeing every report as confirmation of my perception)

There's also an upswing in the number of muggings where the attackers are on mopeds

This BBC article describes a spate of incidents in Battersea (which of course is described in terms of it all happening near Prince George's school)

Sadiq Khan launched a new knife crime strategy in autumn last year. Something seems to have gone very wrong.

As a percentage of the population there's more violent crime in Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Bristol, Oxford, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Brighton...

The Met Police is also the best equipped and has the best response time. The conviction rate for most violent crime is also best in London.

And that's without even comparing London to cities like New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Fransisco, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Madrid...where crime is far, far higher.

Those comparisons yes, but just not sure if agree with one of the safest places in the world.

The crimes/violence we hear about/gets reported isn't the true amount.

There's far more crime in all those cities I mentioned, statistical fact.

There are some dangerous areas of London but there are some ultra safe areas. As a city on the whole, London is one of the safest.

Yes, the crime stats have been low for a while. So I'm left wondering if this cluster is simply random, or if it (and all the moped attacks) are a sign that crime levels are rising.

And what it means about Khan's (post-summit) approach to crime and knife crime in particular.

NoLove - I know a very close friend of one of those "statistics". He had no involvement with gangs at all. Was just a lovely hard working lad.

I'm not did I believe the line that really it's safe right now.

Even allowing for a lowish baseline, an increase of 54% in gun crime and 24% in knife crime is worrying.

I am a Londoner who is concerned about the rise in knife crime (and whether the latest stats mean that it's not actually as safe as it was - s this is rather longer than a blip).

I do worry about my teenagers.

And I am wondering about rpthe Mayor's strategy, as it seems to have been followed by a rise, not a fall, in the rates. I was asking a question about what hat rise means for the current strategy, because if it's not working (which seems to be the case) I want to see the whole question re-examined and something better in its place.

It must be worrying for parents of teens.

The rise is now (according to what I've just seen online - so happy to be corrected if people know better) 40% and has been sustained over several months now. Less in the headlines because of acid attacks (and to some extent moped muggings).

Knife amnesties don't seem to be making much difference. Is there anything else to be tried other than an increase in stop and search?

I think what @NoLoveofMine means is that often the victim knows the attacker ( obviously not all the time)

I do t believe the crime stats, you can make the data say whatever you want it to.

I try to avoid cities and large towns as much as possible.
