Afternoon tea

Wondered if people might like a thread about afternoon tea in London? Personally I'm more interested in mid-range, that you don't have to book months in advance, but feel free to talk about the great, the glorious and the gorgeous at any price!

Fortnum and Mason's is my absolute fave in London. I've been there three times. It's tranquil, it's tasty, the atmosphere is refined yet understated. This is a special treat but it's worth the extra price.

The Georgian Restaurant, Harrods.

Fortnum and mason has a great reputation. Dorchester and ritz are expensive and waiting lists. The langham is my favourite hotel and I have booked afternoon tea there for next weekend. No waiting list, reasonable price and the cocktail bar is amazing.

Any suggestions for this somewhere to suit children? We'll be in London next week and I'd like to take dd (8) for a nice but reasonable treat.

We went to Fortnum & Mason recently
Went midweek , and there was no need to book and no dress code
Was very nice , but not worth the cost (£99 for the 2 of us )
Nice experience though I wouldn't bother to do it again

I go to Fortnum's each year with a friend in our 'time to ourselves' the weekend before Christmas. It's lovely, and I really like the fact that they have a savoury option too.

I have also seen DC there too, of all ages.

Favourite traditional - Langham

Favourite contemporary - Anarch Tea at W London - a punk inspired afternoon tea

Although the Punch room at London Edition is brilliant too but it's more of a leap away from afternoon tea

I hear on the grapevine that the tea served at the Royal Opera House restaurant isn't all that much to write home about.

The Savoy - was there for a hen afternoon a while back - tremendous choice of teas, lemon curd with the scones, and amazing pastries. Everything was so blinkin' delicate :) Loved it.

My 40th coming up this year & a London weekend seems the easiest way to celebrate so this would be nice. We had lunch at the Wolseley last time & saw famous folk so that was good!

My favourite at posh hotel prices is Browns (not far from the Ritz, just to the north of Picadilly). It's been a while since I was there, but it's less busy than the very famous names so you don't always have to book.

Has anybody had afternoon tea in any of the Firmdale hotels? They seem as if they could be contenders for mid-range.

I love an afternoon tea! The love of clotted cream is in my blood...

I really enjoy Bea's of Bloomsbury for a relaxed, modern afternoon tea in London. It is really fun and has beautiful quirky tableware and decor :) plus the food is delicious, including blondies and cupcakes.

I loved the Ritz (so refined and felt very glamorous), but wasn't too fussed about Fortnum's actually! We went on a Saturday afternoon and service felt a bit 'flat'. My DH and I also really like the Dorchester and have been for festive Christmas afternoon teas there for a few years.

I've got a trip to Claridges booked in the next couple of months for a champagne
afternoon tea - I really can't wait!

I also really want to visit the Origina Maid's of Honour in Kew - looks like the tearooms of old and I can tell it will be delicious

The Landmark is amazing - a real traditional afternoon tea but not stuffy. You can go in wearing jeans and nobody bats an eyelid but it still feels special. Or you could go to The Sanderson and have the Mad Hatter's tea which is traditional but quirky. They also have the long bar where you can get some fabulous cocktails.

They are both at the higher end price wise but worth it I think. Others have mentioned the Langham and that is also top notch.

There is a traditional Victorian afternoon tea at the Victoria and Albert Museum every Sunday afternoon. Authentic Victorian recipes and served in the Morris Room next to the cafe. Costs £30. Needs to be booked in advance, not sure how far in advance.

Haven't tried it yet but definitely on my to do list

If you like mad and wonderful chocolate and cakes, try afternoon tea upstairs at ChoccyWoccy Doodah. Utterly amazing (it's in Soho, just off Carnaby St)

The Gore Hotel on Queens Gate in Kensington does a lovely reasonably priced afternoon tea. I arranged a friends hen party there last year. It's also close to Kensington gardens if you feel the need to walk it off afterwards!

I really enjoyed the afternoon tea on the boat trip down the Thames. The food wasn't amazing but it was nice and you could
go up on the top deck when you had finished eating. I booked last minute and got a discount.

V nearly booked The Gore last weekend, after some Googling but have gone for here after lots of drooling at menus etc.

Will book a big one maybe for the summer - they were all booked up this time, as quite short notice.

Been to the Landmark and The Savoy. Both excellent. The Savoy was recently and was £74 approx with a glass of champagne and it was bloody worth it. Loved it!
