Educational Movies During Lockdown

I’m exploring different films to show my 7 year old daughter during lockdown. She’s right into her history. I’ve tried Schindlers List and Saving Private Ryan but didn’t go down to well. Any suggestions?

Saving Private Ryan and Schindlers List are both 15 - I am not surprised they didn't go down well! Perhaps you need to aim a bit lower with a 7 year old? Goodnight Mr Tom is PG. You could also look at things like national treasure or night at the museum which are family films but contain a lot of history references. or Apollo 13? Hidden figures?

I'll second Apollo 13. My son did a worksheet from Twinkl about it this week, then he watched the film and is now fascinated.

Goodnight Mr Tom is a good one as is Carries War and Back Home - all based on books. My son is 8 and we also watch films that are based on books. We read the book together, then watch the film. We've done The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Harry Potter, Coraline, Wonder, Fantastic Mr Fox, Matilda, Charlotte's Web and Mary Poppins.

You could talk about together about the difference towards the film and book or before watching the film get her to research who wrote the book, when, what genre it is. All educational. If any of the books are too challenging, you could download an audiobook of it to listen to.

Gosh, they are quite odd choices for a 7yo.

I'd say Apollo 13, Hidden Figures, Sound of Music, all mentioned above are way more appropriate for a young child.

Mine love the Attenbrough documentaries and there's a one with Cox about Planets which is very good.

Not really history but DisneyPlus (£5.99 a month but free trial for a week) has got National Geographic films which have lots of wildlife /some science / geography in.
