White Rose Maths Year 1

Any teachers out there or people really familiar with Year 1 Maths teaching and curriculum?

Our school is not setting work from or using White Rose stuff but I thought I would have a look as it is working with BBC Bitesize right now. Thought it might be helpful to supplement.

I like it. But DD6 finds Maths hard; she can't concentrate on the videos for a start. There is a limit to how far we can go... I can see that White Rose goes into more depth than our school with adding and subtraction etc. Is that right? It seems that they cover the non-statutory parts of the Year 1 curriculum...

Just wanted confirmation of that really. For example, using bonds to ten to subtract within 20 is more than our school expect at this stage...

Also, to use bonds to 10 to add and subtract within 20, don't they need to know already by rote all the number facts WITHIN 10? In order to partition all the numbers? Our school have not made them learn those yet. These are just some thoughts about it... happy to leave it until DD can cope... Smile

Just interested to hear some views!

My son started doing the white rose maths for year 1 but he finds the videos tedious and now refuses to watch them. He will do the related worksheets but he will not watch the video.

He will do The Maths Factor with Carol Vorderman. Her videos are a couple of minutes and then you do the quiz and games. He enjoys the maths factor. It is free to use at the moment. His maths has improved significantly over the past 6 weeks since he started using it.

That's interesting. Can you choose the topic with Carol V?

My son finds some of the White Rose videos very long (some are 25 minutes!) and repetitive but otherwise I think it's nicely put together.

I thought number bonds to 20 was something they had to know? My oldest did them in Y1. To be honest, it's the same pattern, isn't it, if you know 3&7 you will know 13&7?

My son is obsessed with mathseeds that come as part of the reading eggs app. We ended up subscribing as I think it’s the best software he’s used. You can get a free trial though to see if he likes it. Even though he is year 2 he is now doing year 3 maths. I just sit there sometimes like 😮
