Can anyone recommend a cheap hairdresser for our au pair?

We're in Saffron Walden but she often travels into Cambridge - she mainly wants someone who can trim her fringe but if she can get a full trim for under £30 then she'll be happy

Any recommendations?

surely it would be cheaper for her to get it cut in sw?

Millarkie · 23/11/2009 19:55

There are lots of salons here, but she's enquired at a few and been quoted £40-50 for a dry cut (and one offered to do her fringe for free but it's still really long and in her eyes)..I thought Cambridge - with it's student population may have a cheaper place. (I recommended the non-trendy old lady place I go to but even that is £35 for a dry trim).
If anyone knows of a cheap place in sw would also be interested

I have a hairdresser that comes to my house I think this is about the price that she would charge.

don't think she would go to SW though, could ask her to see if she would be happy with a stranger going to her house.

ChasingSquirrels · 23/11/2009 20:37

mine comes to my house and does mine for £5. But we are slightly north of Camb.
I think she might be best finding a mobile hairdresser in SW.

Millarkie · 23/11/2009 20:43

That's an idea - I'll have a look round for a mobile hairdresser, we used to use one in London and got the whole family's hair cut at the same time. There is a really nice kids hairdresser in SW so I hadn't looked for a mobile one since we moved here.

How about Cambridge Regional College? They do cuts for models and are quite cheap. Alternatively I go to someone about 15 mins from Saffron Walden who is quite reasonable. I don't know exactly how much she'd charge just for a cut but she does a full head of highlights and a cut for £65. She'd need a car though as it's not really on many bus routes. If you email me [email protected] I'd be happy to pass on her number.

Thanks DaisyMoo - I'll email you. Au pair does drive so that's no problem.
(I've been searching for mobile hairdressers around here but not found any local ones yet).
The College sounds a good idea too.

Not sure if you have made any progress but I work at the college and she could get a trim for about £20 (can confirm prices tomorrow) I go to a hairdressers in Cherry Hinton - Trim Set, have never had any probs and a dry trim is £15. Email is [email protected] if you'd like any other info.

Hows au pair settling in?

Millarkie · 30/11/2009 22:00

She's doing fab thanks - I found the website for the college and it is her favorite place to try - we just need to work out the logistics of getting there and back (it's not a part of Cambridge that I'm familiar with).

If she wants a hand let me know - can give either decent directions by car/bus. If she fancies coming in the week I can get car parking sorted for her.

Walked over to the saloon today and it looks lovely (please just ensure she asks for a graduate!)

Millarkie · 02/12/2009 14:51

Is there a bus there from the station? She tends to use train to get to Cambridge- she's not too keen on driving in/ through town.
:-) at graduate! Are the trainees really that much of a gamble?

The trainees are ok and they are all supervised (Level 3 are pretty good). It just takes them a VERY long time and it is a bit hit and miss!

Graduates are about £20 for wash, cut and blow dry all really lovely.

Once at the station the C1 goes directly to CRC (via the centre of town) It drops off straight outside the college, then everything is very clearly signposted.

If she can get to Newmarket, there is a great little hairdressers there that i use that charge £25 wash cut and blow dry

Octavia09 · 03/12/2009 19:36

There is one hairdresser in Cherry Hinton where you could probably have a haircut for £15.00. I do not remember the name of it; it is behind the Tesco next a charity shop.

Octavia09 · 03/12/2009 19:43

The one in Cherry Hinton is probably called the Trim Sett
