Is Walthamstow an ok area for a single girl in her twenties?

Trying to get my sister on the property ladder. Thinking somewhere North-Eastish on the Victoria line (she works in Victoria) and Walthamstow seems ideal - lots of proper shops, cafes etc but easy access into central London. Oh, and cheap.

She would prob be living alone though, and often walking back from tube alone. She does this at the moment in Barnet - and I quite happily walk in Stoke Newington on my own late but is Walthamstow particularly dodgy? Was otherwise thinking Seven Sisters which is fine but there isn't much there...

Welcome any opinions, going to have a first look on monday. Crazy I live over the road in Stokey (and grew up in Barnet) but have only been to Walthamstow a couple of times so can't think!

Thanks

I lived in Walthamstow for about 5 yrs on my own until DP moved in and we had DD (still live in Walthamstow). Never had any problems. I'm from North London too and have lived in a few different places. Walthamstow way nicer than 7 sisters. Not as nice as Church St but certainly no dodgier than Stoke Newington High St and some of the less salubrious areas of Stokey!
Basically, there were areas I'd avoid walking at night (like the market) but I never had any trouble. Actually, tell a lie, someone tried to mug me once when I was pg but that could happen anywhere in London.

If I'd seen your email a few months earlier I could have offered her my flat to rent but I'm renting to someone else now

Hiya,

I'm 22 and live on my own in Walthamstow (St James area). I moved here when I was 21 and brought a flat with the help of my parents. I drive but travel to work by tube and I go out regularly, driving, tube (late) and use local cab station... I love it round here!!! I've had no problems, seen nothing bad and would recommend it to anyone, definitely want my little sister to live near me soon!

Hope this helps! I even walk through the market late at night on my own, so does my sister (19 years old). I don't go through the park but pretty much go everywhere else on my own with no fear!! Ofcourse, wherever you live there could be issues or a couple bad stories! But truthfully, I was more scared coming home on my own in Finchley than round here!

Definitely agree with the above comment.... MILLION TIMES BETTER THAN SEVEN SISTERS!!! I lived there for 14 years and a couple dodgy experiences including being mugged at gun point on my road!!... thats not the norm tho but still... I wouldn't move there on my own!
