Hello, I'm not trying to do a netmums round up honest huns xx, but thought it would be nice to have a wee thread about local events in the festive season.

At the Mortonhall Klondyke Garden centre this weekend 22/23rd there will be free face painting and balloon making to celebrate the opening of their christmas grotto. We went last year and its a good way to kill an hour or so with DCs before hitting the cheese scones in the cafe.

Also Santa is as above flying into Dobbies on Sunday 23rd Nov at 11.00am, again free, apparently this is worth seeing.

I think the Marie Curie Hospice christmas fair is on Saturday 6th December.

I'd be interested to know about anything at weekends or Mondays particularly in the South Edinburgh area

Good idea!
I believe the Tollcross Christmas lights will be switched on at 6pm on Tuesday 2nd December (at Tollcross junction, foot of High Riggs). There will be a choir and brass & pipe bands from local schools.

Not very christmasy and not in Edinburgh but the five sisters zoo in west calder are having a free entry weekend this weekend.

rookiemater · 20/11/2008 15:47

Ooh I have never heard of the five sisters zoo. Is it good ? And good one re the Tollcross Christmas lights. Does anyone know if Morningside is doing a Christmas lights switch on this year ?

Yeah it is not a bad day out for a reasonable amount of money. They have a website if you want to google it. It is not a big zoo like Edinburgh but it is a fair size and has a park and a soft play. kids can also get hands on with the animals and can go in and feed the lemurs. My kids are animal daft and we are members at Edinburgh Zoo but they like going to the west calder one.

liath · 20/11/2008 19:51

Five sisters zoo is great and there's a VAST soft play next door to warm the kids up in if it's parky.

Again not really Edinburgh itself but East Links family park starts their Christmas stuff on the 6th dec with santa arriving every day on the train.

rookiemater · 20/11/2008 21:15

Oh Five sisters sounds really good. We find Edinburgh Zoo too big to usefully visit with a 2 year old anyway. Probably won't make it this weekend but will put it on our list of things to do.

Gyle santa event tomorrow night. It was quite good 2 years ago no idea about last year.

mawbroon · 21/11/2008 16:35

Is it Dobbies or Klondyke where santa is coming in by helicopter rookie?

I told dh it was Klondyke, and he said, don't be ridiculous, there's nowhere to land there what with all the power lines.

Now I am confuuuuuuuuuused.

rookiemater · 21/11/2008 17:57

It's Dobbies he is flying into . Klondyke altogether a more muted affair, will probably trundle in on a scooter or similar.

Great, thanks!

That will save me standing like a pie looking for a helicopter at Klondyke.

rookiemater · 23/11/2008 15:15

Very disappointed. Santas helicopter arrival at Dobbies was cancelled due to poor weather so he arrived by fire engine instead. Felt v sorry for poor wee boy that had won some competition and was meant to be arriving with Santa, instead of exciting helicopter flight going for a drive instead. However he seemed young enough to be easily entertained.

Does anyone know if Ikea are having their winter wonderland again this year??? I cannot find any information online about it.

singyswife · 23/11/2008 15:53

Does anyone know????

mawbroon · 23/11/2008 16:11

No idea singyswife, I would guess they are though.

Rookie, we were at Dobbies as well. DH was being very cynical and reckoned that there never was any helicopter and that it was just a ploy to get us all in.... How come they had time to laminate signs and get a fire engine

We were not the kind of customers that Dobbies wanted this morning though! We ate their sweets and chocolates, watched their santa, but didn't spend a single penny in the shop.

Scotia · 23/11/2008 16:37

I heard Ikea is not having the ice rink this year. I'm on a local committee and we heard through that. I think they are doing something else though, but can't remember what.

Dobbies usually does have Santa arriving in a helicopter, but I'd guess they will have to have contingency plans just in case of bad weather.

Was it the party fire engne? Ds was at a party in that earlier this year and had a ball.

rookiemater · 23/11/2008 19:05

Ah well mawbroon we kept the evil empire going ( do you know Dobbies has been bought over by Tescos). DH informed of this fact after I had spent a shedload on wild mushrooms and other random things in the food hall.

We also went to the Melville pub for lunch which was quite nice, although DS wasn't keen on his scampi, a child of humble habits I'm afraid.

Rookiemater - you asked about a Morningside lights switch on - there is one, I saw a poster about it when I was in the library the other day, but of course I can't remember when it is [head like a sieve]
If no-one else knows I will make a point of looking again next time I'm in!

rookiemater · 27/11/2008 20:34

Ooh Ta Tatties.

Also new thing Fountainpark is having Childrens Face Painting and Santas grotto with small free gift for children. I think its on every weekend between now and Christmas between 12 - 4 ( Am too lazy to get up and check leaflet)

OP posts:
Tatties · 07/12/2008 15:47

Checked in the library - Morningside lights switch-on is tomorrow (Mon 8th Dec) at Morningside Clock. Refreshments from 6.15pm and lights at 7pm

mawbroon · 13/12/2008 17:26

Not exclusively festive, but Earthy is having a shopping night on Thursdya 18th dec.

they are doing 20% off between 6.30pm and 8.30pm and there are free samples of stuff on the go.

It's on causewayside, or maybe it's Ratcliffe terrace.

LOL so vague but I am slobbing on the couch and don't have the energy to get the flier that I picked up earlier
