Car troubles - can anyone advice with a good reliable mechanic/garage.

Hello
Can anyone who lives in Hackney recommend a garage / mechanic who they've used more than once, ie: have been pleased with the work, outcome etc... and gone back again and possibly again?

I actually need to get a diagnostics run on my Toyota Corolla because a 'Malfunction Indicator lamp' comes on whenever i go over about 50mph.

The Toyota garage on Seven Sisters have quoted £111.63, which seems extortionate.

I was burnt badly by that garage called AA1 Autos on Mare Street back in Spring 2005, in that they fitted me a new alternator into my Ford KA, then within six weeks whilst i was driving to Devon, one of the screws came loose and created a rip in my Cam Belt (i'm only spouting what i was told, i'm not an expert)

Both the RAC (who towed me to Devon) and the mechanic (who my dad knows) told me that old screws had been fitted and they shouldn't come loose within six weeks.
They had basically done a really shoddy job.

They wouldn't accept any responsibility but did in the end pay (i think) £20 towards the cost of the labour to screw my alternator back in properly and fit a new cam belt.

Obviously my RAC membership went up because of this.

Anyone else had problems with these guys?

Charlie

I use my mum's mechanic in Walthamstow - he is a one man show but he is quick and v reasonable. I think he charged me £50 for a diagnosis on my ford focus when I had trouble with the heater. Cat me if you want some more details

Try The Car Hospital on the east side of Hackney Downs. Run by a very laid-back but thorough and honest West Indian guy. Does what he says he's going to, it never costs that much.

Not sure he has totally 21st century diagnostics like bigger/posh garages, but he knows cars.

Good luck!

Janx, I don't have CAT i'm afraid.

Can you e me on my hotmail.com address with a charliepw at the front (just trying to discourage spammers)

Probably too late for you Charlie but in case anyone else is reading, we have used Mehmet (or Uhmit? DP can't remember) on about 5 or 6 occasions - if you go to the goods entrance behind Tesco on Morning Lane you will see garages on either side of the railway arch in front of you. Mehmet's is the first one on the left. He has so far been cheap, quick, reliable and fair, and willing to find workarounds. However I would like to stress that DP has always done the car stuff - you never know whether it would be different for a woman.
