Having a baby in the Portsmouth area

Hi there I was hoping to get some info on where people have their babies in the Portsmouth area! We're moving to the area next summer and I'm trying to decide whether to wait until after the baby is born. Thanks!

hey i had all 3 dc in the main maternity unit in portsmouth and i had great experiances with all of them i was also move on to the maternity led unit which is just downstairs cos of breastfeeding probs and it was very nice down there too

I had all 3 of mine at St Mary's in Portsmouth, all were C-sections and the care we received was fine. Actually they saved mine and DD2s life, I had a crash section and she needed to go to NICU - the care there was superb. They have the main neonatal unit for the central South Coast so very good doctors and nurses (obviously hope you don't need them!)

I then transferred to our local Midwife led unit for postnatal care which again was fab.

The main hospital St Mary's is old and is actually being closed down and Maternity is moving to the shiny new QA Hospital in 2009.

You can also choose to deliver at home, at a midwife led unit (there are a few around Portsmouth) and also at Southampton or Winchester (but that's a fair way to go when you're in labour!)

Hi, I had ds1 up in the hospital. Care was great, no complaints whatsoever. He had to be rushed to a different room to be resuscitated when he was born, but everyone was very reassuring & kept me at ease while he wasn't there with me.

Had ds2 in the Mary Rose - the midwife led unit, which is just on the ground floor of the hospital. Again no complaints, everyone really friendly & helpful. It does get busy down there though, but they're really flexible and will let you stay as long as you like or get rid of you if you're begging to go home! I was desperate to get home as soon as he was born, so they had my notes & everything ready, so that as soon as the 6 hours was up I could get going. xp's nephews xgf was only 15 when she had their ds, and she stayed for 10 days and they were happy for her to do that.

I had both my boys in St Mary's (consultant led unit) and had a fab experience both times. Did have problems establishing breast feeding with my first but had excellent help from a breast feeding expert (provided by the hospital). The midwifes were very busy but a great help (particularly as mine were awake all night initially). Hope you settle in well in Portsmouth .
