Credit Crunch Food Porn: Best takeaways in Brighton & Hove?

BrummieOnTheRun · 14/08/2008 20:20

After extensive research, I've found a great Indian, Chinese and Thai, but have failed to find a REALLY good fish & chip shop.

And are there any kebab shops that don't come with VIP tickets to A&E?

Recommendations gratefully received

Bardsley's in Baker Street has long been recognised as the best F&C in town - don't deliver but will happily send in a cab so you pay the whole bill to the driver - so not a cheap option. Not a big kebab fan so can't help too much there either, but I did notice the other day that the one along by Hove library has a top 5 star council hygiene rating. Go on tell us your fave Indian Chinese and Thai then....

Ooh I love Scores on the Doors. Have got quite obsessed with it and refuse to go anywhere with less than two (and preferably three) stars.

Pleeeeease tell us a good Chinese cos I haven't found one yet

Sea breeze up south over street is so much better than Bardsleys and you get better portions.

Lees Garden & swallow house on London rd are good for chinese. China Garden in Preston St now deliver and prices aren't to bad but the sweet and sour balls have too much dough on them.

God I love my food

Two good Fish n Chip places? Fantastic. I fear a 'taste off' coming on...

My vote for #1 Chinese choice has got to be Number 3. It's on Sackville Rd near the junction with the Old Shoreham Rd.

#1 Thai would be Thai Connection on Blatchington in Hove. Thank god they don't deliver because it isn't cheap and I'd be (more) bankrupt.

The best Indian we've found is Raj Pavilion on Preston Road in Brighton. We used to use their sister restaurant in Hove which was equally fab.

I'm absolutely starving now! Tks for the suggestions. I'll keep an eye out for that kebab place in Hove too...

Empire Tandoori on Lewes Road is fab for Indian. The open kitchen is also fun to watch and my kids used to always want to come and pick up as the chefs passed poppudams through the window (Lees Garden and Swallow House Chinese restaurants are actually also on Lewes Road, not London Road). AA kebab (also on Lewes Road, corner of St. Martin's Street) used to be fantastic and you really could eat your dinner off the floor if you wanted but it has been taken over so I can no longer vouch for it.

Best ethnic Brighton restaurant though has to be the Chilka House (Goanese food) at 15 Baker Street (off the London Road). It looks nothing from the outside, it moved from much nicer premises on St. James' Street quite a few years back, but the food it fantastic. Good job DH has just cooked Indian because the thought makes my mouth water!!!!

Agree with rnb about Bankers-much better than Bardsley's which is a friendly Brighton institution but a bit overated imo.
Used to love Kambi's on Western Road for fab Lebanese food but haven't been there for years so don't know if it's still good.
