How exciting to be starting thread

Yay, thanks Sfx, am already looking forward to banana bread, mmmm!

In Sweden they had Noise Police (everything is so formally governed over there) but what a great idea, they used to go and put a stop the noise polluters, no messing.

oh spot-on kew and paddle..
dd does indeed think it's "mama-dada-molly's" bed...because, to all intents and purposes, it is, of course!entirely down to us (more me than dh, tbh)
but - you know what i'm going to say - it's a phase.

sing, oh go on, you can tell us. share with the class.
now you're confusing me..how can you like GF and the lovely atticus finch? (fictional or otherwise)
one of my fave books, actually, but haven't read it for years.

slng · 26/02/2008 15:13

Steppie - I'm a very complicated person! Anyway I always thought of GF simply as a suggestion of what you could do about sleeping and eating and not much else. Is she about more!? Everything else I rely on Atticus Finch
(and my other book).

slng · 26/02/2008 15:14

Must stop posting now and concentrate on watching Thomas the tank engine.

SushiMummy · 26/02/2008 15:29

I've never read any parental guidebooks - I'd rather have an extra hour in bed instead. Also don't like being told what to do.

My older brother did better than me academically but he is crap at relationships (bad GF choices!).

Ros - hope you are feeling better soon and the appointment with doc goes well. You are deffo NBU regarding the bus incident. What a horrible/shocking story!

SJ99 · 26/02/2008 15:30

LOL at watching TTE, I have to read Thomas book daily as it's DS fave book, great that he knows all the engines and name and corresponding numbers, but sad that I can recite them too Would much prefer to re-read Mockingbird

No nap here, it's always been hard to get to nap during the day, even as a baby, he gets way too stimulated & can't switch off. Strangely he's ok at night probably because it's dark and nothing to look at. Putting off potty training and move to bed for as long as feasibly poss, no point in inviting a battle prematurely

stepfordwife · 26/02/2008 15:44

thomas the tank engine...now you're talking

sfxmum · 26/02/2008 15:49

hello all

Ros hope all goes well and deffo get ds checked out. hope you feel better soon
dreadful people yo are not BU!

I once saw a horrible horrible situation where 2 separated but drunk/ druggie parents were each truing to get rid of their boy, about 6, it was in a packed train and painful to watch, the kid ended up being smacked this was many years ago but it still bothers me.

Cov gorgeous cake, I read somewhere about a woman who started a catering business but her first step was to bake cakes and go around the local independent cafes asking them to sell them and ended up with load of clients.

SJ lol at tattoo. dd likes posting things too, we often find surprises in unlikely places.

slng&SJ dd knows more about trains than I would ever care for and all the engines in Sodor are roll called regularly.

hope the ones working manage to concentrate

sfxmum · 26/02/2008 15:51

regarding parenting books it is precisely because I don't like being told what to do that I choose to read the ones I have

slng · 26/02/2008 16:16

The nice thing about parenting books is that when you shut them they can't harangue you. At worse you can take them to the charity shops.

I know so much more about trains and railways now (in two languages) than I ever thought possible. I quite enjoy it though. It's almost always fun to know more than less.

I'm on Lego duty now ...

ComeOVeneer · 26/02/2008 16:18

I don't want to get into full blown catering as I don't want to have to employ staff/get premises etc. Think I will stick with cakes. I plan to start of small doing them for family and friends, building up a portfolio, do a few sugarcraft courses, then start doing wedding fairs etc and build from there. Not expecting to end up with a vast business, but hopefully will earn a small income and keep me out of mischeive once ds is at full time school.

sfxmum · 26/02/2008 16:35

I expect you will need to do a Food Safety course too and keep it current.
All worth it I reckon

I remember fondly the cakes I had as a kid for birthdays, my mum had a friend who did them professionally

does anyone have any ideas for meet ups tomorrow? lollipop?
we didn't make it to Kew today just local park

ComeOVeneer · 26/02/2008 16:36

Good point sfx. I have ordered a book from amazon about starting up a cake making business from home, so hopefully it will make clear exactly what the business side of things entails.

Kewcumber · 26/02/2008 16:41

I bleedin' hate Thomas the Tank Engine - lovely pictures dreadful stories. Have just started DS off on Paddington with a book someone bought him for Xmas - amazingly he listens all the way though (shortened kiddie version) but I like it because in a way Paddington is adopted too

sfxmum · 26/02/2008 16:54

KC I would not say that in a room full of toddlers or they will set Sir Topham Hat after you

"you have created confusion and delay...."

why is my, otherwise apparently bright child, completely obsessed with stuffing her fingers in her mouth to gag toddlers!

sfxmum · 26/02/2008 18:01

cov apparently there is a fair coming up later this week at Olympia which includes being your own boss from thisorg

why did I post on a class thread?
clearly idle hands....

ComeOVeneer · 26/02/2008 18:30

Thanks for that sfx. A bit premature for me but certainly will keep an eye out for next year's (assuming it is an annual thing?) or similar. Have found you can do food safety certification through online teaching which is useful here. Don't know if an at home cake business requires it, but it looks pretty straightforward anyway.

SJ99 · 26/02/2008 19:10

Cov - good luck with course, cake business idea sounds very exciting. Would love to do something like that when DS is in school, well not cakes (so no direct competition!) but something else creative

Paddle - just thought, if DS goes to Orleans/Teddington too then Minipads and DS could end up in the same class

Slng - when are you off on your trip?

DS also loves reading the Mr Men books esp Mr Greedy which is such a joke as it's the opposite of him

Sfx - LOL at Soder roll call. Going to lunch with music class mums tom, even though we no longer go they kindly invited me but you're welcome to come round in afternoon for a cuppa if you like.

OP posts:
slng · 26/02/2008 19:29

COV - my aunt used to bake cakes for a nursing college, and also for friends and family. I have happy memories of our dining table staked to the ceiling of cakes and pastries and biscuits, and eating the scraping off cake tins, and having butter icing on toast for breakfast!

Malaysia trip at end of May. I hate it when you have to get tickets so early and have to spend all the intervening time waiting, IYKWIM.

I'm surprised to find myself quite tolerant of children's books and programs. The only thing I positively detest is Barney, with his incessant "see what fun you can have if you use your imaginations". Off with his silly head, I say.

sfxmum · 26/02/2008 19:42

Barney is evil slng I am with you there
all of those shows with 'now children what have we learned today?' annoy me a lot.

SJ thanks for invite must check back tomorrow, depends on her royal highness the fairy princess really

rosmerta · 26/02/2008 19:58

I also detest Barney, fortunately its not so popular here so think we can avoid it! Ds does like trains but I've not started on Thomas yet, he also seems to like Bob the Builder judging from him shouting 'Bob' when he sees the magazine in the shops! Funny thing though, he doesn't watch it so how does he know?

Thanks for the support re bus stop, unfortunately their bus turned up before I could say something.

sfxmum · 27/02/2008 09:05

so people did you feel the earthquake?
I thought it was too mild, at least in London, to wake up anyone but I was still awake and something fell in the upstairs flat and it definitely shook!

good morning all

SJ99 · 27/02/2008 09:10

Never watched Barney - is it American?

Last night I decided to try and piece together all the research I had on schools, OMG what a minefield [cue headspin] Think I have cracked it now though, so have worked out which schools fall in which catchment area, which are linked, know which ones to exclude due to lack of required faith, dates for application etc, which leaves us with a few areas to target in terms of househunting, phew. Need to make a few follow up calls to borough & schools to confirm my understanding.

Also forgot to mention that I ventured over to Eel Pie island yesterday afternoon, what weird place. I saw one blue bungalow with lots of naked dolls in the garden, pretty eerie stuff....

All in all, a very enlightening day.

Forgot to say Good morning all

Pleased to say I didn't feel the quake

OP posts:
slng · 27/02/2008 09:13

SJ - are you doing secondary school or primary? We were roundly told off by friends because we didn't check out the schools before we bought the house ... Luckily all the primary schools are OK. As for secondary, apparently one has a fight every Friday. Predictability is something, i suppose ...

Barney is purple and American and hideous.

slng · 27/02/2008 09:14

What quake?
