James Gillespie's & Boroughmuir High School opinions

I've been reading a lot of threads about these schools but some are quite dated so I was looking for more recent opinions on the above schools. We're looking to buy in Edinburgh and finding it tricky to decide on which catchment to be in.

I can see Boroughmuir has done very well for some time academically, however, I was wondering if extracurricular activities and sport are encouraged? Do you go through school for these or do parents tend to join local clubs? I'm a bit worried seeing how full they are already & that the extension might not relieve this issue... Does it feel very cramped for the kids or does the school manage it quite well?

I know James Gillespie's is also meant to be very good, but what bothers me slightly is they don't wear school uniform? I'm just curious with these two schools, is there one you would pick over the other and for what reasons?

To throw one more in there we also like North Berwick & we wouldn't mind commuting. We'll definitely be looking around all three areas but just very interested to hear what current parents think :)

Mine has just started at B'muir. In the info we received before we'd even heard of COVID, there are a wealth of extra-curricular clubs, including sport, but they're not running at the moment due to COVID.

I can't comment on crampedness but it felt like a good layout when we visited, but that was outside school hours.

Thanks very much for your reply & I hope your son/daughter is settling in well to senior school! Such a big transition. Great that there are plenty of school clubs at B'muir!

Of course, I should have said above that this is aimed at (hopefully) post-COVID times. My eldest isn't due to start for another couple of years so fingers crossed schools are able to operate normally by then.
