Primary Schools in West of Dundee

Hi We are moving to Dundee and have figured that the west end would be good, close to work etc. Harris Academy seems to have good reports. I wondered if anyone has any experience of the primary schools? The area around Rosebank School seems to have lovely flats and houses. Is it a nice school? Less bothered about it pushing kids hard - more about if it has a good atmosphere...

Thanks

Victoria Park Primary is fantastic and I've heard good things about St Josephs. West End is a wonderful part of Dundee, a lot to do, shopping on the Perth Road and Blackness Road, lovely parks a decent library and a lot going on!

I'd avoid the area around Rosebank if I were you, it's very much one of the less salubrious areas of town! (Known as Hilltown)
The west end and the east end are great, amd Dundee is very much on the up these days

SheSparkles now you know that's not quite true. It is definitely known as The Hilltoon. Grin

Hi Thanks so much for the replies! We visited Dundee at the weekend and happened to go to Victoria Park - it looked lovely around there. Will investigate further!

Cheers!
Cathy

The good thing about the west end (i know im biased) but there are a good variety of prices for housing, and a lot of rented if you were going that way. Dundee can be a strange one, there are a few no-go areas, but I moved here 13 years ago and love it here.

@2017SoFarSoGood, you man the Hulltoon😂
The west end is nice, and as a born & bred Broughty Ferry person, if I didn't live where I do, I'd go for the west end

oh drat SheSparkles. You are right. I was obviously channeling my lovely wee granny who was awfy posh.

I always wanted to live in the ferry. Maybe one day!

Cool! Does anyone have any experience of Harris Academy? It looks good on paper but wondered if it has a good atmosphere... Broughty Ferry looks lovely but a bit beyond our budget. The other option would be living slightly south of the river.

Newport on tay is lovely (village just south of the bridge)

CathyNoodles · 27/10/2017 10:09

Thanks - I've seen some nice houses there recently!

The only problem with across the water is the bridge. It can and does close, sometimes weather related, or accident, and it often goes through spates of people threatening to jump. Something to consider if you are working in Dundee because it can often make you late or even not able to get to work at all. If the bridge is shut and you need to get over for School pick up or if a DC becomes unwell at school you need to have someone local to their school as sometimes it can be literally hours and a detour via perth to get home. Which is horrendous in shit weather.

Mammylamb · 11/11/2017 21:07

Oh yes migra.. I forgot all about that! I used to live over the bridge and it was a pain in the beck when the bridge closed

I wondered if anyone knows anything about Camperdown Primary - it is a new school formed from the joining up of Charleston and Lochee Primaries. With it being new there are no reports available yet and I can;t find any old reports on the old schools.

Any info would be great as we've seen a nice house nearby - I could always visit the school too!

Cheers
