My kids love to eat at Cosmo - multi ethnic buffet, all you can eat and cheap but reasonable quality and chocolate fountain for pudding in the evenings www.cosmo-restaurants.co.uk/locations/edinburgh/ . Best pizza in town is La Favorita on Leith walk.
The national museum is well worth a visit and will probably have stuff on as it is the holidays www.nms.ac.uk/national-museum-of-scotland.
For ice cream treats, favourites are affogatogelato.co.uk in the west end or Mary's milk bar in the grassmarket www.marysmilkbar.com

Most people on the site have said a no to the Castle maybe look outside and listen for the cannons at 1pm but most have said inside isnt really worth the spend

Mary Kings' Close or a ghost tour of the vaults.

That's a shame. I love it and think it's fascinating. Dd2 loves it - we have historic Scotland membership so go often.

I have to take particular issue with la favorita being the best pizza in town! It is pretty average.

Peters Yard - hands down, no contest - does the best pizza in town!

Camera Obscura, the museum in chamber street, bus tour, museum of childhood. Lots of the usual chain restaurants about and some nice wee independent cafes etc. Have a great time.

Dynamic earth is good and right next to holyrood park and the parliament for a wander. There is also a great Scottish bbq restaurant at the top of the road called reekie's smokehouse, and the pub holyrood9a opposite does great burgers. Oh and Hemmas is also v child friendly with board games etc.

The open bus tour is always interesting and a good way to travel to a few places while being an activity in itself. For evening time there is a cinema in the omni centre right next to cosmos - and if the queue is too big for there the omni also houses a Frankie and bennies and nandos etc.
