Myself, partner and two children ages 7 and 9. Are looking to move to Hove next summer. I am finding the whole school thing quite confusing and here in London we just have primary school (year 1-6) But I think in Hove it is different and there are primary and junior school. When we move the children will be going into year 4 and 6 does that mean they will both be going to junior school? And is year 7 straight to secondary school?

Any advice would be very welcome
Thanks

Hi.
To explain a bit. We have a mix of schools here. Some are primary as you describe reception to year 6 and some are infants reception to year 2 and then juniors year 3 to year 6.
In practice the infant schools are usually linked to junior schools, that is to say for example should a child go to West Hove infants it is generally accepted they would go on to West Hove juniors and I believe when applying for a junior school place children at linked infants have a higher priority.

The vast majority of our schools are now primaries but essentially all a junior school is is the older primary years on one site rather than all the way through.

You can apply for either a primary or junior school with your age children it just depends what you would prefer. Be aware though places are extremely tight in Hove and you may find you are offered schools in either Portslade or towards the east of Brighton. If you have an idea of area I can try and help with what would be possible schools for you.

The other thing to look at is secondary as those schools are currently catchment based on your postcode and this will be a year 7 start so I would suggest you are better placed basing your housing on which secondary you would like, especially as the sibling link no longer applies unless you live within a schools catchment area so your older child might qualify but then your younger might not.

Hope this helps a bit.
