Belmont House School and Glasgow Private Schools

Hi all,

Looking for some help. My DS is 8 years old and has Aspergers and a visual impairment. His primary school is fantastic, but we feel he will struggle in Secondary so have been looking at independent schools. Unfortunately St Al's (our first choice) feels they would have to hire another LSA to support him. Had a horrendous experience with Kelvinside Academy and now feeling very jaded with the private system. Feels like noone is willing to look beyond the disability to the bright, amazing little boy inside. We have been invited along to Belmont House on Friday and they seem very inclusive and supportive, but then someone told me school has a bad rep academically and shouldn't consider it.

Anyone any experience with Belmont? Should I hold back a year and try again with St Al's or is this a good school for son?

All help much appreciated.

We were considering GH, GA, Hutchie etc, but after experience with KA we don't want to make him jump through hoops and destroy his confidence

Belmont is a lovely small school, and defo worth a look. just look at the league tables if you are worried about exam results, as it will be there in black and white. I would not try again with st ALS, I think they have made their stance clear. I am not sure you will get on very well with the other private schools as they are not inclusive schools - they test. I would look at your state schools more closely as well as you will get a better provision there. Hope goes well.

Belmont has a good reputation for kids with SN. How did your visit go?

i woudlnt bother with hutchie, they are not at all accommodating .

Can I ask why you think your son woudl struggle in secondary ? If you are unhappy with your local secondary, why don't you consider a placement request ? I'm assuming he is being supported by the visual impairment team in primary - Have you talked to his worker about the options and support at secondary ?

Hi - when you say Hutchie are not at all accommodating, what kind of issues have you experienced that they are not accommodating of?

I really don’t think you get value for money going private. Belmont has small class sizes so that may be beneficial in some aspects.

Hi ..Thanks for the reply... your children go to Belmont house school ? If yes how supportive did you find the school for children with various needs ?

Sorry for the late reply I didn’t get a notification. Yes my children go to Belmont. I don’t have any experience with the school supporting additional needs but keen to know your experience if you’re willing to share? :)

Hi ..I don't have any idea because my children are very young ... I have just asked to know about the school and I'm no longer interested in independent schools in Glasgow after hearing my friends experiences on Kelvinside,hutches.... I'm happy to send my children to a good state school 🙂

Following this link as we are exploring all kinds of options for DS who will start Secondary in Sep 2024. He has an EHCP in England for ASD and Dyslexia and Tics. IQ is average but very keen on learning. Would love to hear any experience with Belmont School. Thanks so much in advance!
