Hi we're thinking of moving to Abergavenney or possibly crickhowell. Can you give me some advice as to what these areas are like, schools (senior) areas that are good/to avoid. Also how likely am I to be able to find work? Thanks Lorraine

Hi Lorraine,
I don't know the area that well but I know the secondary school in Crickhowell is very good. Lots of people from Abergavenny are choosing it over King Henry (the secondary in Aber). However I don't know the name of the school! I assume there's only one in Crickhowell though. It's a lovely area Smile

Hi Lorraine,

I recently moved to Gilwern, which is the village next door to Crickhowell. I was speaking to a local lady who sends her 13 yr old son to Crickhowell High School and it's excellent. Her son excels in languages so they are always moving him up and giving him more challenging things to do as they recognise when kids are bright, so that's good. I was told people move to Gilwern & Crickhowell for the schools as they're very good, Gilwern primary has an excellent reputation so I imagine Crickhowell to be the same. Both places have a very 'village life' feel to them and are very friendly and have a community spirit which I love. As my midwife said, "they are still very innocent towns" as such.

Can't advise on employment here as I'm a housewife/expectant mum, so I'm not sure what's available & I also worry about what I will do locally when I want to return to work. I've met a few people who travel on to Ebbw Vale and Merthyr for work though.

HI Lorraine,

I have recently moved from London. Where are you moving from? We have moved to Govilon which is between GIlwern and abergavenny. It is a very small village but we are happy here.

Abergavenny itself has some very nice areas, it is a good sized market town. Crickhowell is more expensive but prettier. I would live anywhere around here really!

I agree with franglaismaman about Crickhowell High School. It has a fab reputation compared to King Henry in abergavenny which is mixed. Most of the primary schools in the area are pretty good. In contrats to franglaismaman I had heard mixed views about Gilwern primary. We are going to have a look at Gilwern primary, the welsh primary in abergavenny and Llanfoist fawr primary.

What sort of work do you do?

We are very happy here, and are slowly settling in.

franglaismaman I am also expecting! When are you due?

Hello, I'm assuming franglaismaman and tomdaleystrunks are happily settled in the aber / crick area with toddlers now? We're also thinking of moving that way but I'm worried I've been totally spoilt with thing to do with kids - round us we have free/cheap stay and play sessions, Lego clubs, singing, baby signing, toddler gym sessions, forest school courses, swimming, rugby, football - you name it. Are there things like that near Crickhowell and Abergavenny? Thanks
