Not too fancy Restaurant in Edinburgh near balmoral hotel?

Help! Meeting up with friends in Edinburgh for dinner on Saturday and they've asked me to book somewhere. They are staying at the balmoral we are coming in on the train to Waverley.

I would like to go somewhere nice but not poncey, where we can have a decent meal and a good old chin wag!

How about Howies on Waterloo place, just a 5 minute walk from the Balmoral. Or if you fancy more of a pub setting then either the Cafe Royal (bar not restaurant though!) or the Guildford Arms- again, both just across the road from their hotel.

Hello! Thank you! I tried howies but both were fully booked for when we wanted to eat. I've booked MPs bistro on Calton hill after a colleague recommended it! Will report back!
