Availability short notice for year 3 boy at Independent School in Guildford

Hi

Please help! I am new to the area and unfortunately have only just been able to apply for my son to attend a school in Guildford starting in September 2012. Unfortunately, the three state schools I applied for, he has not been accepted and I know the offered placement is for a terrible school.

I am really worried as he comes from a good school and is above average for nearly everything. The last thing I want is to send him to a school that will not help him gain his full potential.

Therefore I have been looking at independent schools and there seems to be only a few.

Will he have any chance of placement in an independent school at this short notice?

I would really appreciate any help or advice. Thank you.

Lanesborough is good. Could try Rydes Hill, (Aldershot Road) which is a lovely school, and takes boys up to 7yrs.

what side of gford are you?

You might find there is a space at a state school during the first week in September. Some people will have accepted a private place for y3 onwards and not bothered to I form the state school at which they have been given a place.

Where has he been offered a place?

Cranmore is an option.

This must be such a hard situation for you. I just wanted to say though that there are really no terrible schools in Guildford...where has he been offered a space?
Rainshine's point is also a very good one, it is quite likely that a space may come up somewhere depending on where you are? You may also get a space at a state school a bit further out in one of the suburbs/villages?

Which school have you been offered? I know for example that GuildfordGrove is a great school. I have known people move their kids to Bushy Hill from other schools with "better" reputations.
I don't think there is a "terrible" primary school in Guildford.
Private schools to look at are: Lanesborough, Cranmore, Ripley Court, Longacre, then further to Aldo or Barrow Hills.
However school places could still become available, and you could appeal, and have a reasonable chance of winning in year 3.

Thank you for all your responses.

The place he was offered was at Weyfield.

I have moved to the Merrow area.

I can only go by ofstead reports and SATS results and even the other schools I have been told have places all seem to have poor results.

I have tried Lanesborough, Ripley Court and Greenfield. Waiting to hear back from Cranmore and Longacre.

Any other suggestions? I really appreciate help. So worried with hardly any time left.

Longacre and Belmont are lovely schools that might have a space, both do minibuses from Merrow.

Barrow Hills in Witley is good, but it is about 8 or 9 miles from Merrow, so not sure if that would be too far for you?

My sister sent 3 children there. They take children from 3-13, and there is also another good private school just a couple of miles further who take them from 11-18, called King Edwards. My sister had one of her children there from aged 13 for a few years until they moved out of the area, and I know of an adult who was educated there too who had good things to say about it.

Sorry, i meant to add Frensham Heights is a good one too, but that is further away still. It might be worth a look, depending on how far you are willing to travel.
