Hi Ladies, DH has landed himself a job with Clarks in Street and we need to relocate, somewhere within commuting distance. Ideally no more than 40 mins drive away. We don't know any areas or any people and have a 7 mth old DD. I'm really looking for suggestions on villages or towns we should look at. I'm keen not to be too isolated so somewhere with some local walkable facilities if we run out of milk etc. Pub would be nice and some mum/baby activities. If we could have a reasonable journey to a swimming pool that would be fab. LO may have some special needs (having an MRI on Wednesday - gulp) so we may need to be nearish to a hospital too.
Some places that have been recommended thus far are South Petherton, Bruton, Wedmore and Taunton but would appreciate some honest feedback.
We live in Guildford at the moment but i'm a country girl at heart so if we didn't have LO would be happy to go quite rural but I think that would be unfair on her.
Thanks in advance! Debs

I would consider the following towns: Shepton Mallet and Glastonbury are quite close to Street and are family -friendly. Wells is nearby and although officially a City is really market-town size.
There are some nice villages / smaller towns too e.g. Somerton but unless you are prepared to run 2 cars they can be quite isolated and the bus service infrequent. My mother lives in rural Somerset and there is one bus to Yeovil every week!

Blimey and the chances are I would end up missing the bus!! Thanks for the feedback, very much appreciated.

There is a regular bus service from Bristol to Street via Wells which is very good. Also regular buses from Wells to Bath so the towns are OK. You also need to bear in mind for commuting that most of the A roads aren't dual carriageways so journey times may be longer than you think.

Wedmore is lovely but small. Wells is a good bet, nice shops close to countryside etc probably got plenty of toddler groups etc. or how about cheddar? Some shops but rural, is on a bus route from bristol.
Glastonbury similar to wells, but busy with alternative type visitors in summer and many shops catering towards this crowd.
Taunton is ok but not as nice as the other towns mentioned in this thread.
We live in n. Somerset, near clevedon, and can get to Clark's cross country in 30 mins, but that is on a Saturday, no idea what a weekday commute would be like. All the main roads get incredibly busy on summer weekends by the way!

Hi, I work at Clarks HQ in Street and live in Bristol (currently on maternity leave). I live in Southville which is the right side of Bristol for the commute to Street - the cross country drive takes about 50mins. There is lots of people at Clarks who do this drive and lift share. The Southville/Bedminster area is a great place to be a mum in! Good buggy-friendly cafes and baby activities. Good luck!
