moving to Richmond, N. Yorks - suggestions for good villages to live in?

Not sure this is the right local group but there isnt one for Richmond. Does anybody live in the Richmond area and able to suggest a lovely village to live in that has a pub and transport to school? Oh and ideally a primary school with after school club?

Any info gratefully received!

Richmond itself is lovely. Round there's Scorton, Melsonby and Reeth I've heard are nice to live. I grew up in Wensleydale and got a bus to richmond school every day

Thanks HD1 - much appreciated - will plan a drive around. Am hoping to send DD3 to Richmond School - we visited it for the open evening and it seemed a good place to be. Do most villages have buses to school?

All catchment schools will have. Check out St Francis Xaviour (SFX) school, it's better than Richmond. The headteacher of Richmond isn't fantastic I'm told by friends who are looking at comp schools.

Richmonds second best though.

La Piazza in Richmond is a good lunch stop if your driving around!

Can you go to St Francis if you dont go to church though? (we dont!) I was looking at Richmond because its a Performing Arts specialist school and DD3 is very much into music and drama etc.

We are very much looking forward to moving north but its all a bit of a worry with timing school moves and house sale etc. DD3 is currently in last year of primary so hoping to make a clean swap next summer. Will need a primary school also for DS - and having difficulty finding out if any have after school clubs. I guess the small ones wont have them as a rule will they?

What about Hudswell as a village?

I don't know anyone that lives in Hudswell so can't comment on that, not sure about the church thing either! Prob not as it is catholic...

The music and drama staff are amazing at Richmond, I was really musical and they were really helpful and the drama teacher mrs moss is a family friend and is lovely!

Both the methodist and c of e primary in Richmond are really good, I have mum friends that send their kids to both.

Have u looked at living in Richmond itself? There are some really really nice housing estates and it's a lot bigger than it looks but still feels like a community iyswim

We met a drama teacher when we went to look round and she was fab - but cant remember her name - all a bit of whirl - longish dark hair? She was telling us about the Sound of Music production this year etc.

Where are the good places to live in Richmond itself? Or probably easier, are there any places to avoid?

Yeah and very well spoken. She used to be deputy head before they changed her job she's fantastic.

Places to avoid are Reeth Road or anywhere around there and Cutpurse.
Everywhere else is really nice.

Places I'd look to live are St Nicholas Drive and all streets off that (my parents used to live on Wathcote Close which is a street off and that was really really nice), Whitefields and all streets off that, Hurgill Road, French Gate and near The Green. Theres also Lombards Wynd if your a millionaire!!

Norman F Brown are a well trusted estate agents in Richmond, I know a lot of people that deal with them

There's also an estate agent called Hoppers which my dad has a house with that he rents out, they definitely deal with the Dales but not sure about Richmond itself.

Where are you moving from?

West Yorkshire - up on the Pennines so used to hills and a bit of space and views. Never lived in a town. House prices look pretty comparable to here though which is good but we are definitely not in the millionaire category!

Everything feels really positive about Richmond so am getting quite excited about moving north. Plan to spend a few more weekends there over the winter. My main worries are sorting out schools so it goes smoothly for the kids.

Haha that's ok! I know a lovely b and b in Richmond if you want somewhere to stay? It's called arndale and is run by Tina and Paul Lambert. Truly beautiful place (I know their daughter!) and it's the only 5* in Richmond and surrounding areas, don't think it's badly priced either. Or there's Milgate b and b which is also beautiful. Milgate is in town, arndale is a 2 min walk from town.

The good thing about Richmond school is that the teachers are really really nice, and the students are welcoming. When I was there I started knowing noone and left knowing everyone! We had a lot of new students and everyone just seemed to make room for them in social groups

Haha maybe! I live in Leeds at the moment though as at Uni but regularly back.

When your DCs are older keep them out of the fleece on a night....it is a terrible terrible place!!!!

Hope you are enjoying Leeds - DD1 graduated there last year (have two older children also) and enjoyed it very much - great student life!

Hi I have lived in Reeth, Catterick Village and now in Richmond. Methodist School runs a before and after school club, my DGS goes to the school, goes up to juniors after summer. Richmond itself is best really if you can get somewhere here as if weather is very bad there can be problems getting in and out of Richmond. We live up off Darlington Road, most of Richmond is fine to live in. DD went to Richmond School and wants DGS to go there

Yes, I realise weather can be a problem - but used to hills and snow where we are. DD has a place at Richmond school though for September so that is good - and a big relief! Still havent decided on junior school until we find a place to stay - going to rent I think until we sell ours and decide where we want to buy. Woudl like to be in Richmond but never lived in a town before and just not quite sure its for us. Love the station though and the parks. Will see!

What are you after in terms of a house?

Hi Apricot - 4 bedrooms or 3 with options, a proper sized garden with walls and a view, preferably not on a 70/80s housing estate, large kitchen (or a wall we can knock down), new or renovated - might consider a "project" but did that last time and not sure I can face it again! Some of the developments in Richmond and Middleton Tyas look interesting - I am not sure if they are new builds or redevelopments of old buildings though.

Do you live in Richmond/nearby?

Richmond is lovely - if you are after a nice village near Richmond I would suggest Middleton Tyas, Melsonby, Aldbrough St John, Scorton, Gilling West. You get more for your money in Catterick Village or Brompton on Swale but I wouldn't choose to live there personally as too close to the A1.
