Hi there,

We are relocating to York from the south coast and could do with some help on areas, its so far to just pop up!

Ideally we would like to be in a village outside of york but we have 3 kids (ages 8, 4 and 3) so would need nearby football clubs, cubs, rainbows etc.

I will be working at the hospital, strange hours so I will also need a local childminder so cant be anywhere too remote and my husband will be working covering a large area travelling around leeds, harrogate, york, so being near the motoway network would be good.

And obviously we would like good schools but dont want to pay over the top prices, lol. We want everything hey!

We are coming up for 2 days in August to look around a bit so any advice on where to concentrate on looking would be a great help! So far we only have Wistow and a few other villages near Selby and Wilberfoss on the list? Any thoughts?

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd really appreciate any help!

I would look to the west of York rather than the south tbh. The hospital is on the north side so quite some distance away and the A19 can be very slow. Or if you do go South then not to far out - so Naburn, Escrick, Dunnington.
Shipton By Beningbrough, Green Hammerton, Poppleton are all towards the west side.

Mum2be79 · 03/08/2011 20:33

Selby too far (especially as you're working at York hospital). Though it takes only 15 mins to travel up the A19 to get to the A64, if you were to use the ring road it can take up to 25 minutes in rush hour and similar to drive through York. I live in Holme Upon Spalding Moor and it takes me 35-40 mins to get to York Hospital (will be giving birth there - due 1st Jan!!!).
Make sure you choose a village/town within 5-10 mins of the ring road. All places are really good round York. You'll be spoilt for choice.

twinklegreen · 03/08/2011 20:43

Haxby and Strensall, both very large villages north of York, great places to live, lot's of facilities yet still a good village feel, but only about 10/15 minutes from centre of York. Both have good primary schools, plus Strensall is in catchment for Huntington secondary school.

bellavita · 03/08/2011 20:44

Hi, I live in Wilberfoss.

Lovely primary, great kids club, great childminders.

My DH commutes to Leeds every day 40-45 mins.

Childminder next door but one to me. There is one that runs the kids club (annexe within the school) and she as just had a huge nursery built next door to the school.

We have football clubs, tennis clubs...

LawrieMarlow · 03/08/2011 20:44

I live in one of the villages mentioned by Northernlurker although would say it is to the East (just past the ring road and off the A1079). Would agree that it would be a bit of a pain to get to the hospital from although it does have rainbows, cubs and football. And various other activites :)

Looking more at your OP as your DH will be based more to the West then lovely as my village is, I think you would be better over to the West side of York and I don't really know about places there. I would suggest checking for school places for your 8 year old (when does the 4 year old start school?) although that should be easier as schools don't have to limit class sizes to 30 for year 3 and up as they do up to year 2. If your 4 year old starts school this September then you would need to think about schools for both of them and this might be easier in a smaller village where there can be flexibility.

twinklegreen · 03/08/2011 20:44

And about 15 mins from the hospital.

LawrieMarlow · 03/08/2011 20:45

But having seen that bellavita's DH commutes to Leeds every day then why not live a little nearer to the middle of York and come to Dunnington :)

Northernlurker · 03/08/2011 20:46

Lawrie - I think I know which village you mean and yes it is more to the East but as a dedicated resildent of North York it's all SOUTH to me Grin

twinklegreen · 03/08/2011 20:48

Or if you're after a really small village you could go for Flaxton, 5 mins north of Strensall, not much there, very pretty and does have a good nursery.

Northernlurker · 03/08/2011 20:51

I always think Stockton on The Forest is nice and Sand Hutton also Holtby and Warthill - but not a huge amount going on. Haxby has loads going on though - and a decentish bus service.

LawrieMarlow · 03/08/2011 20:51

Suppose it is South of North York :) But still East of York Grin

Northernlurker · 03/08/2011 20:52

You need to bear in mind that very few hospital employees get a parking permit - or if they have a permit they can't find a space! So you may well need to factor parking time in to your commute. You will get a permit if you work shifts - but coming in for a late and trying to park at 11am is all but impossible.

twinklegreen · 03/08/2011 20:55

Sand Hutton and Stockton ot the Forest both lovely villages but that A64 is an absolute bugger! Was at a wedding in Sand Hutton on Saturday and there was 8 mile tail backs in both directions Shock

LawrieMarlow · 03/08/2011 20:58

A64 is a pain. Got caught in a jam there going to Monks Cross yesterday. Would normally cut through Murton and round that way but thought it would be all right on a Tuesday morning Hmm. Going round the top of York on the ring road is often quite slow though.

bellavita · 03/08/2011 21:11

Lawrie Grin at A64... Every day in the hols is like that! Except for around 9ish when we went to the cinema today - not a problem, but can guarantee from about 9.40 onwards it is always like that.

A colleague at work - her friend has just moved to Flaxton. The school there has only about 10 children.

hanahsaunt · 03/08/2011 21:16

We did this in May - dh moved for work and I blitzed York and surrounds over 5 days to find schools and house. There can be a massive contrast in the villages mentioned - Strensall primary (fabulous - really, really impressed) is ~470 pupils and Stockton on the Forest has ~75 ... houses meant we ended up with neither though had already ruled out the latter on the basis of size and that our two older boys would have been in the same class in a year 4-6 composite which wouldn't have been right for them.

FWIW we've ended up slap bang in the middle of town, about a 10 minute walk from the Minster in a beautiful house in a beautiful location and a great school. Neither the house nor school had been on my list but it pays to go with an open mind.

(Grumpy with N Yorks cubs/scouts though as have tried several times to get info to no avail so if anyone knows of central cubs and scouts do tell!).

LawrieMarlow · 03/08/2011 21:17

Sand Hutton's school is tiny as well I think. Warthill also v small. Not sure if Holtby has a school or not.

I think a medium sized village is a good sort of place to be in :)

LawrieMarlow · 03/08/2011 21:19

hanahsaunt I can ask our Beaver leader if you like. Although he is away at the moment I'm sure he'd know where they are. Have you found anything on the Scouting website at all?

Am a little jealous of your lovely house near the Minster - would be lovely just to walk into York rather than car/bus/bike (latter only if I am feeling v energetic).

Anyone get caught in the thunder and hail storm earlier on?

Northernlurker · 03/08/2011 21:21

I was safe at work Grin but I heard it. I read on the press website that Dunnington got trashed though!

LawrieMarlow · 03/08/2011 21:25

I was actually in the middle of York, but the washing on the line [whoops] was saturated. And there were floods all over the roads. Still at least it means the flowers don't need watering (Dunnington getting judged for Britain in Bloom tomorrow. There are quite a few retired people here who love tending their gardens. Those of us with children don't although I did get some bedding plants Grin)

LawrieMarlow · 03/08/2011 21:27

Goodness - there were a few branches down in our road but didn't realise it was like this Shock

hanahsaunt · 03/08/2011 21:28

We pitched up to Homestead park with our picnic snack in tow and thankfully the rain started just before we got out the car rather than after ... was quite incredible. My washing got it though!

It's been through the scouting website that I've been trying ... would love you to ask your Beaver leader.

Lots of villages look lovely but have very little by way of infrastructure so potentially very car dependent for much of life (it's a sticking point in this house - we are renting before committing to a final destination; we may still be renting in 10 years time Smile). Completely adore current location ... now if we just had a bigger garden ...

bellavita · 03/08/2011 21:28

I was outside doing my ironing and saw the storm coming our way. I have never ironed so quick! Got everything inside and then it started. Ds2 was out in it though. It never crossed that child's mind to come home on the first clap of thunder. Oh to be nearly 12 again... Him and his friend took cover but he was still like a drowned rat.

hanahsaunt · 03/08/2011 21:29

There are still houses here for sale here if you fancy city centre living (new build townhouses by the river).

LawrieMarlow · 03/08/2011 21:30

And I feel bad for mentioning the Britain in Bloom things as it says it has devastated preparations which some people have spent a lot of time on. Hope they can patch things up before tomorrow.
