Nice day out - within an hour's drive of Abingdon?

Hi

I have a child-free day coming up and am spending it with a friend. We thought of going to a market town type place for a bit of shopping and food, without the need to wrestle toddlers back into high chairs etc.

Except - we don't know where to go. We have thought about Chipping Norton / Bourton in the Water etc type places (north) or Marlborough (south). I have not been to any of them. Is there anyone who can recommend somewhere nice for a day out within an hour of Abingdon?

TIA :)

Wallingford is nice (maybe a bit too close). Don't know what sort of shopping you're after, but if it's clothes, then not really any of the small market towns......
Chipping more of a town than bourton, which is mainly tourist haven (but nice tea shops). I like moreton in marsh best of the cotswoldy towns, i think (but must be just on the limit of your hour from abingdon)

Bicester Village - just down the A34! Loads of shopping.

(although obviously Bicester Village isn't exactly a market town, but still!)

Thanks both. We don't really want to shop as such but just mooch around. Hope the weather is as nice as today!

Wallingford is a nice market town, as has been said already. Or Henley, but that may be a bit far? Newbury is a bit bigger, but we have had some nice trips out there - shops of course, then you can walk along the canal for a bit of relaxation.
