Please help SW London mums! Looking for a great pub for Sunday lunch, there will be a toddler in tow and 2 breastfeeding mums with newborns. Any suggestions gratefully received.

The Fire Stables in Wimbledon Village used to be very good and staff very family friendly. But that was a few years ago.

I've lived here for 8 years and haven't found one yet so am very interested in this thread...I quite like the Telegraph but it doesn't have anything for children in particular apart from lots of space outside to run around on afterwards.

Went to the Cap in Hand (Weatherspoons) today on the A3. Took over an hour for the food to arrive but they gave us it for free so was worth the wait!!

Just had a few more thoughts...

We've been to The Stonhouse just off Clapham high St recently with toddler and 5yo - nice 'kiddy's' menu and a good mix of families and 'normal' people! Very buzzy, very busy though (but seemed to get busy post-2pm with 'normal' crowd so was OK for us arriving early with kids. Truly lovely Sunday roast - like you'd have at home rather than what you often find (horrible tasting pots, meat pre-sliced, etc).

Also nice a few years back was:

brasserie.highroadhouse.co.uk/menus/breakfast/

on Chiswick high Road - might be too West for you though.

And The Mitre in Holland Park - but similary might be too west. Its changed hands recently though and haven't been since but menu looks good stil themitrew11.co.uk/

And Dexter's Grill was brilliant for kids - more focused on kids than any other place (full of families) but really good food for kids and adults alike - more brasseries/burgery than roast though. Wandsworth, Bellevue Rd - I think. (BIL might've mentioned it closed down though?)

BTW....I don't live round there but when we visit my BIL (who's in the restaurant trade and likes his food) he takes us to these places.

Great suggestions, thank you both! Any other locals feel free to chip in!

What about the William Morris at Merton Abbey Mills? I haven't been there for a very long time, and I don't have little children any more though, so can't vouch for it now - but setting is lovely.

If it doesn't have to be a pub, then Mama Rosa, right next door, is lovely and very family-friendly.

Lots of family friendly choice in Wimbledon Village.

The Crooked Billet is packed with families on weekend lunchtimes(might need to book in advance)

There is also another pub a couple of doors down (sorry- can't remember the name) which has been refurbished fairly recently and used to be packed with families though I haven't been there lately.
Also There iis the Rose and Crown on the high street in the village - good Sunday lunch and fine with kids (and dogs!)
All are perfectly placed for a stroll on the common to get the babies off to sleep and work up an appetite before lunch.
There is also Carluccios, that French place by the roundabout with Ridgeway, and Strada and probably more
I have breastfed in all of them!!

The biggest I believe is the Dog and Fox, right on the bend in the village - not bad food.

I think the best sunday lunch is the Crooked Billet - but you must be there when it opens otherwise you will not get a table in the pub - but you can book a table in the restaurant on a sunday, it's crowded and crazy on a sunday with famiies everywhere but somehow everyone gets fed very well.

Other than that, lots of restaurants in the village, I agree Carluccio's is lovely, but not much fun getting your buggy up the steps and you'll never get a tbale with space for 3 prams...she speaks bitterly with experience!

It's not a traditional sunday lunch venue but there is always Giraffe, they don't bat an eyelid at a pack of prams - and, if you book and warn them, Cote are good at putting you in an appropriate table with space.

And don't worry about the new bfers- in the early days, I believe I have exposed myself in most of these places!

Hey everyone

We ended up at The Telegraph near Putney - very family friendly, tons of kids, good food and dogs allowed too. Only snag is its hard to get to by public transport- we drove as I'm breastfeeding and not drinking.

Here is a link in case anyone searching this topic is interested: www.thetelegraphputney.co.uk

It's a great pub, we had lunch there with 2 other families on Easter day. We walked over the Common, so felt able to eat a huge lunch!

TheHouseofMirth · 18/11/2010 21:31

Gosh it's changed a bit since the last time I was there in my student days and the landlord had to get his baseball bat out to deal with some trouble...

PheasantPlucker · 19/11/2010 10:45

HOM it is now a 'local pub for local people - we'll have no trouble here...!'
