Living in Auckland, thinking about Queensland

We've been living in Auckland for two years now and for the most part have really enjoyed it. But we've been having housing issues and have been trying to buy a house in the area we live but without success. We could move to a cheaper area but a huge attraction for us is living walking distance to the beach.

OH keeps getting emails about jobs in Oz and we're feeling very unsettled and contemplating Queensland. Any mumsnetters out there? We have a one year old kiwi and enjoy eating out, visiting different beaches, the odd museum. We're quite used to humidity and like things warmer.

Anyone any impressions of Queensland they'd be willing to share? Or any suburb suggestions so I can have a look at houses there?

Depends if you like the very warm humidity. Lived in QLD and its always so dam humid. Think i personally would prefer Auckland. My older son is out there at the moment. He has been travelling for 2 months and back next week. Its quite old fashioned in QLD, but then so is Auckland by the sound of it. You cant swim in the sea during the hottest time of the year cos of the boxhead jellyfish in QLd.

I am from Brisbane originally and having just gone back for a visit it is overcrowded, overpopulated, expensive (food and petrol and housing is astronomical) but yet I still love it.

As for suburbs, well Queensland is a huge place. Where do you need to be for work?

live in QLd and certainly south of the tropics you are able to swim all year round no box jelly fish.

I do not find it over crowded - we are on the north side. In fact a short drive from where we live is a huge Uk expat area. Lots of expats moved to QLD and have ended up in that area.

I love it. Would not live anywhere else. Depends on husband's job location. My dh works in the city and although we are about 40 minutes or so from the city - he is able to walk to the train and catch express trains into the city. We live 5 minutes walk from the dds school. Very good area. Good amenities. House prices are very very reasonable depending on what you want. We are 20 minutes from beaches - no more than an hour from gold and sunshine coast.

We often catch the train or drive into the city to go to the museum - or we will park down river and catch a city cat up the river to the museum. Dh and I attend shows and plays and see live acts. We are a short distance from good shopping. 30 minutes drive we can be walking in the bush.

Sorry for my absence. My OH is away for two weeks so I'm going solo with DD.

We've decided to stick with Auckland for a while longer. I like the sounds of Queensland- I love the heat and don't mind humidity. Also love the beach and forest. But I think Auckland has a lot to offer and we have just been having a wobble due to recent housing issues. OH has just been offered a new job so we'll see how that goes. I'll be visiting Queensland for work this year so we may look at it as a longer term option. Too many choices.....
