Singapore - encouragement and advice

Hello!

I've read a few posts on here about Singapore and I am looking for some advice. DH has been offered a role out there and very much wants to move. I'm not so keen, but am trying to remain open to it.

I have been there a few times, and we lived in Hong Kong for a while before DD was born, so I have some idea of what overseas life would be like there.

We live in London now, and I'm one of those people who love it. My concern is that Singapore is going to be a bit too small & sleepy for my tastes. We live in artsy, edgy East London now, and I'm reluctant to say goodbye to eclectic markets, trendy boutiques, going to galleries.. that sort of thing. This aside, I recognise that there are many positives to Singapore: weather, child friendly, safer, good travel opportunities.

I'm not from the UK anyway, so I'm not so much worried about missing English things.. or even about schooling (DD is only 18 months, and I don't think we'd stay longer than 2 years).

Anyway, if any of the very helpful Singapore-based mumsnetters are about, I'd love to say hi, get some ideas from you (especially on housing), and any words of encouragement would be kindly welcome!

Can we do go go bambini? - not been there before - would like to try it out!Shalll we say 10am does that suit?

Ps Nomad - Orchard Scotts doesnt sound as good as those listed - company paying but does cost a small/medium fortune. Small kids rooms with nothing going on - tend to meet people round the pool.

GoGoBambini is good for me - both Fidgets and GGB are the same for me in terms of travelling, i.e. taxi.

The website says it opens at 10am, so that time is good

Hi everyone

I was on this thread neat the top under my old name (IrritableGrizzly) and have just found it again - without sounding like a sad party crasher, I would love to meet some Singapore MNers, so would it be ok if I joined you at GGB? I have a 21 month old ds - in fact I was on the due May 08 thread with you Slim, although that was under my old-old name!

flimflammum · 18/02/2010 14:17

GoGoBambini at 10am, is it then? How will we find each other? Hopefully it'll be quiet at that time, I'm not sure.

tootsieroll · 18/02/2010 16:56

Isn't it half term on the 16th of March?
I've never been, so don't know how busy it will be at 10am (but if kiasuism is anything to go by then.....). Does anyone know what 'spot' would be best to go to so the first one there can 'chope' seats, in true Singaporean style

On another note, DH's EP came through, so it's all systems go for us from now!

tootsieroll · 18/02/2010 17:00

Dunbreedin The more the merrier! I am likely to bring my just-turned 2 yr old along (and 4 yr old) so would love to be in the company of others doing toddler chasing

flimflammum · 22/02/2010 06:24

I've only been once, if I remember it's not huge, but the cafe has several seating areas. Also didn't slim say it's just been refurbished? I'll be toddler-chasing a little girl with curly hair (not so common here) so you should be able to spot me. She's at that annoying stage with soft-play places where she's too big to be happy to stay in the little toddler area, but not brave enough to go up the bigger bits on her own, so I might not get much tea and chatting time.

It's not half-term for my son's school (CIS) - his is two weeks later, but they do vary.

tootsieroll · 24/02/2010 12:23

Looks like I'll just be bringing DD along as DS has been signed up for Mandarin language camp by his nan. Will look out for mum with curly-haired girl, FlimFlammum I'm big Singaporean mum with eurasian looking girl with very straight and short fringe (blame it on a scissors-happy moment), probably running away from me!

Louisejp · 08/03/2010 13:55

Hey there - everyone still on for meeting up at Go Go Bambini next Tuesday at 10am? Will be the slightly flustered 'still not used to the heat' dark haired mummy with two crazy blondy kids!!!

tootsieroll · 08/03/2010 21:01

I'm still up for GGB next Tuesday! See you all then! Will join you in looking 'flustered', louisejp!

slim22 · 09/03/2010 08:40

Noted for tuesday!
Hope I can make it.
x

dunbreedin · 12/03/2010 15:13

Drat, I just realised I won't be able to make it on Tuesday - I have a choir practice. Hope you have a fab time!

btw, this is a shameless plug - we are always looking for new members!

Hi ladies,
I won't now be able to make GGB - have had a vomit bug all night, and I think it'd be sensible to quarantine myself for the next 48h. Have fun everyone else that's going.

flimflammum · 15/03/2010 12:51

Oh that's a shame Tootsie, maybe another time? I'm still going if you are Louise? Anyone else?

flimflammum · 16/03/2010 00:02

OK, I'm not sure if anyone is going to show up, and having had a crap sleepless night with DD, I'm not going on the off-chance.

tootsieroll · 22/03/2010 06:06

Hey girls,
Did anyone go to GGB in the end - LouiseJP? I'm into my 3rd week in Singapore now, and boy is it hot (an understatement?)! It's been lovely though, the children are having a great time - it's nice being able to nip to the shops for things past 5.30pm, for a change. Will be heading back to the UK in 2 weeks....am hoping to see some daffodils and less snow this time!
