I am very lucky in the doc dept as I sliced me finger early on here on a lethal bread slicer and went to the doc and started rabbiting in pidgin deutsch. Turns out he spoke perfect English, was just setting up as a doc in our town and had an Indian wife also with perfect english about to join her. He'd spent a year in Scotland training and was crazy with father ted! Can't get better than that!

There must be a doc somewhere near you or in the next village who speaks good English. Dig out your list of local docs and go to one of them until you find a good English one. Unlike many services here others you can bodge by but with a doc I'd get English as it is pretty important. Where do you live? Do you receive a "Gemeindeblatt" telling you chemists rotas etc?

Hope the toe heals. I am presently not sleeping well since parents went and no new routine yet. Going to have to go into the garden and sort out my medicinal berbs I've planted since I bought James Wong's "Grow your own drugs"!

geekgirl · 16/06/2009 19:52

Could I just butt in please? I would really appreciate some opinions on my thread here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/774494-any-other-walkovers-here-Messed-up from people who know what some Germans can be like...

Maninadirndl · 17/06/2009 12:49

GG answered your thread. Hope you get some peace, which is hard to find out here.

Remember, "just say no" not to drugs, but to other pain in the a**e kids whom you don't want.

Maninadirndl · 18/06/2009 17:17

I am thinkign of gpoing to Blindham tomorrow afternoon with the kids, watch feed animals, let them play in the sand and I grab a beer. Anyone up for it?

canella · 18/06/2009 20:08

sorry manina - i'm about 3 hours too far north!!!

and i'm off to the in-laws tom after school to give dh a chance to crack on with dd's room!!

have a radler for me!

Schulte · 18/06/2009 20:14

Hello everyone,

Had a crap week, DD1 had the chickenpox and really suffered. We've only just got over the worst, only for me to come down with a nasty cold. Feel like summer is totally passing us by. Also very jealous of those of you living in Germany with a nice Freibad and Biergarten nearby!

Canella, I haven't lived in D for a while but as far as I know you can choose to go see any doctor you like. With your toe I'd probably go straight to an Orthopaede, not sure you even need a referral from a GP. Or maybe things have changed since they introduced the Praxisgebuehr? Anyway hope it's getting better.

canella · 19/06/2009 09:13

thanks schulte - toe went back in on its own on weds and its now back to being painfree!! its happened 4 times now - might get an ortho doc to have a look at some point!

you really sound like oyu've had a crap week - i'm still waiting for ds2 to get chickenpox - the other 2 dc have had it and werent too bad but it can be really bad in some kids - sounds like your dd got a bad dose!

but at least she's had it now - she'll not get it again!! hope your cold is better!

wonder where everyone else is this week - calling mmelindt, ernest, gracelo, zzenagain!!! have us newbies killed this thread?

Gracelo · 19/06/2009 12:29

Canella,

had a very busy week. More meetings than anybody sane would schedule in one week and at home our new kitchen got installed. I can't wait to put everything back in and have a fully functioning kitchen again. Don't want to see another fast food or take away for quite some time.
It's been atrocious here this week, stormy and lots of rain, some downpours so heavy that the water came shooting over the guttering. ds thought it was great though, he was out there splashing around in the flood that formed around the house and complained bitterly when I dragged him back inside.
Off to find some lunch now. The seafood stall at the pier appeals but I'm not sure I want to brave the rain.

ErnestTheBavarian · 19/06/2009 20:52

his, sorry I've not been around. Du off sick all week which has killed my mumsmetting potential, plus been very busy. I have finally, finally been to the school to sign the boys up. We even quickly hot to meet their teachers and class. Ds2 has met one boy in his class once before and he's also English. The teachers both seemed very nice and welcoming, as did the kids, and the class sizes were good - 21 & 24, so not too much of a jump which I'm relieved about. Still not met the head tho - starting to wonder if he's avoiding me!

We have been now for nearly 2 months without Festnetz and laptop - on Tuesday we finally get connected - hurray. Took the boys to Zlegoland yesterday, so sorry I couldn't join you man, it ad I only just saw your message i'd'vd been a bit late anyway. Had amy job inspiration?

Supposed to rain solid for the next week. One thing I want int new house is a ace go fit outside nut under cover like a perhola or something. Making a list of my dream house.....

Having to to this on my phone which is bit of pain. Will write proper next week

Maninadirndl · 19/06/2009 23:23

Ernest thanks for the reply. Nope I didnt make it to Blindham. You got an email are you allowed to drop it here on MN? i can drop mine no prob.

I built a pergola few years back but it wasnt south facing and failed. Maybe you need advice in this dept? I am no expert but I vccan tell you what NOT to do!

ErnestTheBavarian · 20/06/2009 08:26

oops, just seen all my typos auto correct on phone not always so useful. Obviously I wanted to sit under a pergola, no nuts involved.

Getting excited about moving to the German school now & signed the kids up for the Hort, we visited the Hort and the MIttagsbetreuung, and the boys both said they'd rather go to the Hort everyday than the Mittagbetreuung 2 or 3 times as it looked so good. DD trying to stand up and dh on the road to recover at last. phew.

Anyone else who wants to get organised with meetins or whatever? my email is my nickname on here all lower case at gmail.com

Dh popped out for a bit, must make the house look significantly different. (is a tip)

how's the toe canela, ouch?

canella · 22/06/2009 09:31

whoo hoo - i didnt kill the thread!!!ust about followed your posts ernest - was funny trying to guess what you really meant behind the typos!!! glad you got the boys sorted for school - you'll be surprised by how quick they settle! if the teachers are welcoming then the other kids wil pick up on that - when do they start? is it after the hols? the school hols in bayern are so late - FIL was telling me in thuringen they start at the end of this week!!

Gracelo - sounds like your having proper scottish weather - dont miss it!!! when we moved i had loads of takeaway in the few days i was finishing emptying the house in the UK - by the time i got here i was desperate for some fresh salad and fruit!! but know i could go a takeaaway!!! wont start again moaning about my craving for indian food!!!!

well i took the kids to ILs on fri after school - dh was working on sat morn and had dd's room to paint before her new carpet comes on tues and he was in a foul mood! he gets so easily stressed when the house is in chaos and just goes into grumpy arse mood and doesnt speak to anyone very much or nicely!! he was just miserable to the kids so i phoned ILs and asked if we could stay there fri/sat!! didnt even ask dh - just told him that was what we were doing and he could finish all the painting in peace and i expected him to be back out of his grumpy cave when we got back on sat eve!! think i know my dh too well - it worked! he was back to normal yesterday and all the work is done!!
and we had a great time at the ILs - they dote on the dc and i had a good natter with MIL - she's a bit mad at times but was definitely on good form on fri night!! think the white wine helped!!! just nice to have someone else do the cooking too- might do it again if dh gets grumpy!!

ErnestTheBavarian · 22/06/2009 11:11

Canella, your dh sounds very like mine, except I haven't got any il laws to run too when he's being a stroppy arse, which atm would be full time. Actually, he's been ill all last week, and was feeling better at the weekend, then last night was really ill again, but he has gone in to work today. He's quite worried, and after last night, I am a bit too.

Anyway, I was excited to finally get the school thing underway, but there's still so much I need to know. I guess I should post Q specifically on school thread, so if any one could looky help that would be great.

Can you actually buy carpets in Germany? I don't think I've seen one in ch/D in 10 years!

Holdidays don't start here till somthing like 5th August I think!

Should be getting phone tomorrow. at last. hurray.

canella · 22/06/2009 13:00

whats wrong with your dh ernest? hope he's ok! i'm sure he's just being grumpy cause he's poorly!

i posted on your school thread - hope it helps!

We've got carpets throughout the upstairs of the house - dd is the last room to get done!! not a huge fan of them myself - pain in the arse to hoover - but i'll be grateful in the winter - the rest of the house has stone floors!

Maninadirndl · 22/06/2009 14:29

Anyone else had a stressful weekend with the kids bored indoors? We're quite outdoorsy and the minute the weather brightens we're out there, but the present weather is like winter!

I always say everyone else's break strts on Friday at 5pm but ours starts on Monday at 9am! Today morning was so quiet and nice. My kids who are normally nice generally were actually fighting each other! It happens so rarely it was funny but they didn't hurt each other too much.

ErnestTheBavarian · 22/06/2009 15:35

every weekend seems to be stressful for you man man

Maninadirndl · 22/06/2009 15:51

EtB certainly true the last 4 weeks when the parents were here. When we have a normal routine then its okay but around holidays when they are about me all day then I get a bit fed up I admit.

Today was quieter and better apart from the weather. I hope people don't mistake me for a persitent moaner which is not what I am. I'd say its susuall 50-50 positive negative but I admit to being a tad down lately. MN is helping a lot though!

Gracelo · 23/06/2009 10:03

Canella, our take away options are really not something to envy me about. I make a better dhal or palak paneer than the two Indian take aways that we have here. Our food options are really quite limited. I was hanging out on the British farming thread and became very sentimental about markets and farm shops. We have a Tesco, Coop, Lidl, Aldi, one (fabulous admittedly) delicatessen and a health food shop. The one very good farm shop we had has closed because the couple running it split up (amongst rumours of belonging to the local circle of swingers ). There are attempts to get allotments set up but the neighbours of the piece of land that the council is willing to give for this are up in arms against it.

On the bright side, the weather is turning and there are big patches of blue sky now. I can see the peaks of Mull again for the first time in a week.

hupa · 23/06/2009 10:08

Hi - hope everyone is o.k. I had a self imposed mumsnet ban last week and was amazed at what I managed to achieve. It made me realise how much time I waste here some days. Mind you it also keeps me sane - hence me being back this week.

manina - hope the sun is shining for you. I agree the dc are a nightmare when they don´t get out enough. We´ve finally got good weather today, so will be off out later.

Ernest - well done for sorting the schools out. Dd doesn´t start until the end of August, so I can´t help with questions I´m afraid. Hope your dh is feeling better.

Canella - you´re really lucky getting on so well with your in-laws. Mine only live 5 mins away, but mil is really hard work and we don´t see them that often.

hupa · 23/06/2009 10:15

Gracelo - I really missed British supermarkets when I first came here, but now I find it depressing how few independent butchers, bakers etc. there are in the u.k. compared to Germany.

Gracelo · 23/06/2009 11:10

Hupa, there are some decent butchers here, but there is one baker (in a town of about 8000) that I can think of now. There is no choice whatsoever.
I quite enjoy that I can buy everything I could possibly need at Tesco from nappies to wrapping paper especially when I have little time. It's mainly fruit and vegetables that I miss. The strawberries at Tesco are utterly depressing. They look ok, they even smell sort of ok'ish but they usually are disappointing when you eat them, watery and barely any flavour. I grow some in my garden but they are still green at the moment.
And I just realized that this years Germany holiday is badly timed, too late for strawberries, asparagus, cherries (my favourite fruit ever), Mirabellen and too early for apples, pears, plums, Federweisser...

MmeLindt · 23/06/2009 11:38

Sorry that I have not been around much. The henny weekend in Scotland was great, I even enjoyed the Boyzone concert. They played a lot of other peoples music, not just their own.

Came back Tues, Wednesday was DH's 40th then Thurs/Friday was getting ready for guests arriving for the weekend on Friday and the big bash on Saturday.

The party was fantastic, but a LOT of work. Glad to have some time for myself.

Canella
Does my DH have a clone? He is so selfabsorbed at the moment as he has a new boss at work and is so busy. The new boss sends him huuuuge lists of things to do and he still has his normal work too. He is so stressed out that he only talks about himself and his work. I have given up trying to tell him what is happening with me.

Going to Scotland next week for the wedding and then we have 2 weeks holiday so hopefully that will help get rid of his grumps.

Ernest
Is your internet up and running yet? LOL at your post, I was able to decipher most of it as my iPhone makes similar suggestions. Can be a pain sometimes.

Maninadirndl · 23/06/2009 16:16

gracelo - I love Spargelzeit, just coming to a close. I call it Pinkelstinker for obvious reasons.

We've just started on strawberry harvesting as theres a PYO right next to my allotment.

They've got a PYO flowers here too. you drop off money in an honeyt box. Can you imagine one of them near a prticular city in the north west of England? ; Not only would the money box be gone so would the flowers and even the topsoil!

ErnestTheBavarian · 23/06/2009 17:49

half way there.not fully up & running but phone on at least. just made chocolate mousse.

jealous of your social life ml

honesty boxes are great aren't ehY?

ok, I'm abot equidistant bwn abroad & man, so I suggest abroad & man come round for cuppa & sling kids in dungeon while we have a natter if weather crap next week. or if weather good we get to that damned animal park. do you drive abroad? We gotta meet. madness not too.

I will not mention it again.
Off to make jam tarts now

Gracelo · 24/06/2009 10:08

Maninadirndl, I'm from Unterfranken which is an asparagus growing area. We would get so much asparagus from friends that by the end of the season nobody wanted any anymore. I think that is what I miss being at the West coast of Scotland, the abundance of summer and autumn. I grew up with a garden and an orchard, there was always loads of summer fruit and vegetables, enough apples, pears, plums to last through the winter and to make cider and bottle juice and to give to neighbours and friends.
Those dainty little plastic packs of cherries at 400 g for £3 from Tesco are gone within 5 min once the Gracelos are set loose on it.
I'm trying to grow as much as I can but my garden is right next to a sea loch and there are more stones than soil in it and it is quite small. I hope we get somewhere with setting up allotments but as I said before, the nimbys are up in arms against it. Their main concern is that it would draw attention of the local vandals to the area.
