New, I am west of the city near Furstenfeldbruck. Am very jealous you have people to speak to. I am only 20 mins from the city but noone really speaks English, or if they do it is a foreign language so they don't get me (sob).

How long have you been here? DS1 is in Kindergarten but DS2 is at home with me.

Welcome Newtotheplanet. Don't worry about thread hijacking. There is no such thing here, we are always veering madly off topic (if we even ahve a topic).

Canella
You are really doing well with meeting folk. I think that is the best thing to do, move to a small village.

We were down at the beach today. It was hothothot although the lake is still cool. I had to go in to rescue one of the DC's toys that had drifted out a bit. I had a bit of a Baywatch moment (without the fab figure and great norks) as I whipped off my tshirt and jogged (HA!) down the beach.

DH has just switched the TV on and tuned into some shite programme then promptly fell asleep. Why does he do that?

Welcome Scatty,
I agree with Canella, sat tv would be good. What about looking for some German speakers where you are now? Where are you?

ErnestTheBavarian · 04/06/2009 08:59

Hi everyone. I'm having computer hiccups, so not been about recently.Just seen NTTP - hello - you're in mUnich too? I'm east of - in Feldkirchen. Clearly the arse end of nowhere as no one seems to have heard of it. Never mind. Near Bogenhausen? I think you must be closeish to me.

Canella, you seem to be a real social animal, am impressed.

Abroad, how exciting - those 1t steps. dd is getting about with a halp crawl half hopping on bum, but she is starting to pull herself up to standing? HOw old is ds2 now? DD is going to be 1 tomorrow Better bake a cake or something I suppose.

Ds3 has been having problems at kindergarten with hitting and getting very angry and screaming in anger at the other kids. Had long elterngespräch with Erzieherin. She warned me in case some mums came and had a go at me, so now I'm dreading going to KG case I get shouted at, and not sure what to do to help ds. Doesn't help that dh has got a "short fuse" and shouts a lot.

Need to get amat or something to put under dd high chair - the floor is getting ruined from marks from her dropped food. We've got wooden, I think untreated wood floors - they seem to just soak everyting in and stain really easily, even if you wipe it straight up. Anyone know how I a. clean such floors? B. where I can get a robust mat for under her chair?

Oh, and what's the german for kitchen fitter? I seem to be going round in circle on the yellow pages. I need someone to come in and re-fit our extractor hood which is hanging off the ceiling, and replace the hob. (going to be £££, isn't it)?

ErnestTheBavarian · 04/06/2009 09:03

is MIAD still about? Abroad, MIAD & NTTP, do you fancy a Munich meet up? ANd anyone else of course?

scattykatty · 04/06/2009 10:01

Hi, we moved with the army to a place near Swindon... I'm not sure but I think it actually may be Hell

I've asked at the HIVE and the women said she'll call me with the numbers of all the German people here so maybe we could have a little German coffee morning or something.

What I would really like would be DS to have some little German friends from whom he could pick up some more German. I bought him the Baby Boom Boom German CD which is good but will have a look into the TV thing.

ErnestTheBavarian · 04/06/2009 10:42

sorry to ignore you scatty. if you want him to actually be able to speak German, you'll def need to get him regular contact with german speakers where he needs to use the language. We were thinking of returning to Uk and dc losing their Grman was big concern to me. Some ideas I either had, or were offered by brilliant mnetters were
finding local german famileis to pal up with. even have reciprocal play dates etc so ds is surrounded by germn & needs to use it to communicate.
try employing a german speaker as au pair or as a mothers help that comes in a couple of times a week & only speaks to your ds in German
look into German saturday school - I'm sure your ds will be far too young but find out if there's one in your area and see what they suggest?
Get in touch with german embassy or try to hook up with german club - there must be something

nfortunately as your ds is so young, I think your best bet is to get back to germany Mine really didn't flourish in German till they attended KG ft at age 5, so even tho being born their, the fact that we speak english ft at home meant they just didn't get it until they had to use it daily to communicate with other german speakers.

Good luck.

Sorry you don't sound so happy near Swindon.

scattykatty · 04/06/2009 13:57

I've looked for Saturday schools and there is actually an amzing children's German nursery.... but it's in Bristol I have just found a German group that meet in Swindon on Fridays so that is excellent.

If we go back to Germany next year DS will be going to a German nursery for sure. I have images of him with his huge sqaure backpack going off to school and chatting with his friends in German that I just can't give up on!

ZZZen · 04/06/2009 14:03

Hi all, welcome the newcomers!

Ernest, have your boys started at the local school now? Everything calmed down a bit on that front?

Scatty, is it on the cards then that you'd be moving back to Germany next year? If so, I wouldn't worry too much about the language. Plenty of foreign dc start kiga in Germany aged 3 with no prior knowledge of German and pick it up perfectly by the time they're ready for school.

Ernest I am not a fan of Munich having escaped the place. More the kids zoos like Blindham is a fave to meet people as it has animals to cuddle and a huge sandpit near the beer garden which is civilised.

My parents are out here right now from UK so am caught up with them a week or so but after that would love to meet in Blindham.

Maninadirndl · 04/06/2009 18:24

Do you need a URL? I can supply one if necessary.

ErnestTheBavarian · 04/06/2009 19:49

Hi Man, No, I've checked it out. It does look good. But it also looks absolutely miles away, especialy for the others, if they chose to come. WHat about something similar, but closer to town?

what's tierpark hellabrun like anyone know?

canella · 04/06/2009 21:19

evening!! just a quickie - been a busy bee and no time to read all the posts yet!

do you all know its british food week in lidl? random things like fish and chips and a steak pie are in the freezer but i'm more excited by the big packs of cheddar cheese!!!!!! and not expensive either!! got cheese and baked beans!! kids think its christmas!! oh and randomly bought some indian snack things - so british !!! yum yum!

Maninadirndl · 05/06/2009 00:03

Canella I discovered that also today. Civilisation has landed!

Topped up with Brown Sauce today. Wots that silly Brandname Hazelwood? Loada crap!

No worries Ernest, thought it weas just U an ME. If so then need another place. Tierpark Hellabrunn is a pain in the arse 70s zoo which has never been renovated. My tasty sis in law lives near there - I wandered round it in January with a fecker of a hangover.

The other alternative is Tierpark Poing which I have never tried but if it means meeting other mums I am okay with that.

Gracelo · 05/06/2009 06:07

I like Hellabrunn. I don't recognize it at all from your description, maninddirndl. But it is usually absolutly packed with people during the summer and during school holidays. I spent 3 weeks there one summer watching baboons as part of an animal behaviour class and we got in before the Zoo opened for visitors and that was fab.

Canella, glad you liked Wuerzburg, my school was right underneath the Festungsberg. We'll be there end of July, right in time for the village fete. I will eat Zwiebelplaatz und Schneeballen until I burst.

AliceThroughThelookingGlass · 05/06/2009 06:32

nips in

has anyone take their child to a psychologist
in Austria or German

we have an appointment in two weeks time

....tis cinders by the way

ErnestTheBavarian · 05/06/2009 08:28

I have in Switzerland. if that helps Alice...?

British week - does that mean I have to brave a LIdl ? Ohh, as I avoid these places (Lidl & Aldi, could you clever people keep me regularly updated on any cool offers ;))

Man, I've been to Poing. I was about 1 week from giving birth, so mainly remember pigs and wanting to beat dh to death for making me shag round a frigging animal park for a whole day in the blazing heat

That was a year ago too, cos... today is my little baby's first birthday!

Anyway, I don't mind, let's set a date and time and everyone can say if they can make it and we can then maybe decide one that's best for everyone, maybe not Hellabrun if you hate it and it gets packed.

I can't do next week, as going back to that Bischofsmais place Wednesday till Monday, then taking the boys to Legoland. So any time after next Monday suits me. If it's a Friday, the kids get in at 3, so it'd be more like 4, unless it's during the day, in which case any day is fine and egal.

ErnestTheBavarian · 05/06/2009 08:57

serious question - can you freeze cheese?

Gracelo · 05/06/2009 09:23

Yes, you can, hard cheeses like cheddar or Emmenthaler, don't know about Brie or Camembert.

canella · 05/06/2009 09:29

happy birthday ernest to your little one - how quickly a year goes by!! you must have liked that holiday place to be going back again!

maybe wait till tomorrow to brave lidl then - i go every week to aldi for a big shop but always come out feeling stressed - its too much jostling and people buying a silly small amount of shopping and giving me daggers when i dare to have a trolley full!! i caused a huge queue yesterday by daring to take something back - an old man was shouting "kasse" at the girl behind the till cause there was only one open!!

gracelo - i loved wuerzburg but we went on a sunday so not much open - need to go in the week for some shopping! such an international feel but i'm still happy living in my little village - would have felt a bit anonymous if we'd lived there.

AliceThroughThelookingGlass · 05/06/2009 09:29

ernest

what happened

what questions did you ask

where you refered through the kindergarten

am wondering what on earth to ask

thank you

hi to everyone else

ZZZen · 05/06/2009 09:29

Hope you Muncheners manage a meet-up!

Canella, I tried some of that Lidl stuff last time they had British week and that brand like manina says is prettycrap. Hope you like the things you bought. We had the baked beans but they tasted bleurgh..., I also bougth the little apple pies and they were violently lemon flavoured, think the big steak pie was quite nice though. What Indian snacks did you get?

I found that Irish Cheddar, the KerryGold one at Plus and it's quite nice - to my taste anyway, I'm not a big cheese freak.

Interesting visions here of Ernest being shagged by her dh around pigs in the zoo 1 week before giving birth... That's the way to make yourself known in a new town!

canella · 05/06/2009 09:30

missed those posts - hadnt refreshed the page! is this so you can freeze your cheddar cheese from lidl?

ZZZen · 05/06/2009 09:31

jeepers no alice/cinders. Would be wary of getting him on file and havign the social services involved in my life etc. Why is he going, do YOU really think it is necessary? I wouldn't do it just because the kiga want it, only if I also thought he needs some help.
