It is a nice house canella and I think it is reasonably priced. You may just be on the market at the wrong time and you have been a bit unlucky with that.

Did you hear back about the woman who had viewed 3 times? That does sound as though she is likely to take it.

LOL deb, I veer off healthy food ALL the time, unfortunately, partly because I'm a lazy cook.

Not sure I'd want him to acquire a taste for regular junk food though. Agree with canella, mashed potatoes with cream and even big chunks of butter thrown in and fatty meat etc might be better. Then if he should ever get the opposite problem, being overweight, it would be easier to drop cream/butter and move from fatty to leaner meat.

Does he like salami? How about banana milkshakes with Vollmilch, some cream, big chunk of vanilla ice-cream. You can then just move to a vanilla yoghurt-banana smoothy when his weight is back up.

Macaroni cheese with lots of cheese in it? Pizza with cheese, salami, some veg and so on for him and a leaner version for everyone else?

hi! please what does 'schmunzel' mean? And how do you pronounce it?

ZZZen · 28/05/2009 10:48

ooh nice word.

Just like it's written, sch= sh: shmun-zel

Clear u though, not too short, don't do a lazy English uh /er sound!

sort of smiling (also invwardly) in a nice way, not like smirking at someone.

OP posts:
creamcaramella · 28/05/2009 11:08

i like the way it sounds. what does it mean?

ZZZen · 28/05/2009 11:09

creamcaramella · 28/05/2009 11:22

oh that was the meaning?!
My God! sometimes i say to my daughter "Stop that you schmuzel!" and it makes her smile and stop being naughty. It sounded like it meant 'litte girl' or 'naughty little girl to me'. Unbelievable! I'll continue to say it anyway cus it works! ;)

ZZZen · 28/05/2009 12:18

oh I call mine everything under the sun too, from snuffle-chops to ragamuffin to The Great Dictator

Actually a lot of Germans use animal names for their dc, like Spatz (sparrow), Schnecke (snail), Maus (mouse), Mäuschen (little mouse) etc etc

ZZZen, you can still feed your littlun with good food full of calories without it being junk.

For good meat try to track down a local farm selling its own eggs who if they don't sell their own slaughtered chicken will konw of a farm who does. I've been buying eggs and pasta from one farm near me almost as a habit and developed a friendly relationship with them, same as our honey which comes from another farm, and our farm milk from yet another. I eventually found an american lady thru these contacts who had been living in our town since 1953 who used to sell me organic meat direct "vom Bauernhof"

I have seen mince in Lidl marked as "Bio" and tried a bit however I don't buy meat so often from discounters. I went veggie out here as I didnt like the quality of the meat but suffered in the end, but have had to compromise and go back to it.

You can do wonderful fatty yet quality food out here with a load of mince and organic veg, all fried up and drizzle in some red wine for some extra flavour then make up a lasagne. Total calorie bomb there.

Good luck with the eating. Continue with fatty meat but also drop in organic veg. I know of a veg boc scheme called "Hofgut Letten" who may deliver near you. Also try "Baindlhof" farmhouse ice cream. They are a franchise all over Bayern who make the most awesome ice I have ever tasted and I know absolutely nothing about ice cream.

Google also "Arche Hof" to find a farm selling rare breed meat near you. There's one opening near Valley this year that I am aware of.

Good luck.

ErnestTheBavarian · 29/05/2009 08:11

MIAD, it's me who needs to fatten up ds, not Zzzen. Anyone know though about good quality free range meat. I don't know of any farm shop type things near me. Will look at those things you mentioned miad. Not seen free range meat at all here.

docs advice did make me laugh tho. My favourite was that fish fingers are good, but don't grill them - fry them in butter!

I think he'll have to be on 5 pints a day and reach middle age before there's any chance of my ds becoming overweight.

Looks nice today. Anyone got any plans for the weekend? Monday is Feiertag, not sure what to do. We're at a beergarten tomorrow, and I'm on a night out tonight - Indian restaurant

canella · 29/05/2009 08:48

aahhh indian food ernest - i'm so jealous!! we didnt have it every week in the UK but sometimes after as busy week it would be a friday treat!! i could kill for a chicken dopiaza right now!!! saw an aisle in Kaufland yesterday with "world foods" - so stupidly expensive!! need to get some recipies and make my own!!

i'm no help with the meat thing - sorry!!

We've been waiting for 8 weeks for a builder to come to fix the doors upstairs - we had no bedroom door - not the best for marital relations !!! so i asked the neighbour yesterday did she know one and she sent a man from the village round to speak to dh last night and he's here this morning fixing the door!! i'm constantly amazed by the village community atmosphere - i love it!! at the moment!!!

hope you all have a good weekend - we've no great plans although dd tells me hannah montana is out in the cinema next week so i guess we'll be doing that one day!

hupa · 29/05/2009 09:10

Ernest can´t really hekp on the meat front. We live in a small town/large village and the local butchers supply most of their meat from the local farms, so people are generally happy knowing where the food came from. Not sure if this would apply to where you are.
When I first came here I was at a baby group and one of the mums said she was planning a BBQ and did the others think it would be o.k. to buy the meat from the supermarket as it was a bit cheaper. Everyone (except me) was really shocked and said there was no way they would eat meat from a supermarket.
Does ds like cheese? My Dd would happily eat huge quantities for every meal if I let her. We bought loads back from France last week, but it had all gone within a few days.

Canella - your house looks lovely. It looks like the buyers could move staight in without having to decorate - a big plus in my book. Hope you sell it soon.

ErnestTheBavarian · 29/05/2009 09:24

hupa interesting. in our local supermarket, the butchers is a vinzenmur concession, and the butchers in the village is a vincenmur - so it there really a difference bwn buying from butchers and suermarket? or am I thick and does everyone know more than me? Don't know people to ask don't think.

cheese is hit and miss here, unfortunately, more miss than hit. the kid would live off dry carbs (plain bread/rice/pasta) if allowed. he isn't btw.

hupa · 29/05/2009 09:33

Ernest - no idea about the butchers. To be honest we hardly eat meat and then I buy it from the supermarket because I eat chicken and our butcher only has it if you pre order and I´m not that organised.

Gracelo · 29/05/2009 10:07

Ernest, I think the idea is that butchers procure their meat from local farmers and that that means that the animals havn't been transported all over Europe in search for some obscure EU subsidy. I don't think this is necesserily true but I'm equally doubtful about all that "organic" meat that is now available in British supermarkets. Where does it all come from so suddenly? The little I know about organic farming and the process involved in getting certification makes me very suspicious about it. It takes many years to turn a farm organic.
I get excellent beef and lamb here in Scotland (and so I should) but I really don't like the pork. It just doesn't taste like pork at all to me.

MmeLindt · 29/05/2009 10:23

Ernest
Vincenzmuir is a big company, the meat in the supermarket will be exactly the same as in the butchers. You will probably have to search the local villages for a butcher that is still independant. I htink that VM has forced a lot of them out in the past few years. There are less and less independant butchers nowadays.

We have not found a good butcher here yet either. I did get some meat from Coop recently adn it was ok. Might have a look in France, I noticed a butcher there.

I agree with the others, try using butter and cream in DS's diet to fatten him up. Check the fat content in the cheese as well. I would try to use "good fat" rather than just fry eveything and giving him crisps etc. Butter, cream. What about fish? Could you get a hold of some cod and do fish and chips? With mayo

Getting hungry thinking about it

Got to get a move on cleaning the house, we have vistors arriving this afternoon.

Alarm system has been installed this week so I am feeling a bit happier.

abroadandmisunderstood · 29/05/2009 14:34

just dipping in to say congratulations to Frosch!!! My DS2 was born here and also had the sunbed treatment. Hope you get home soon.

To add to the tick convo, doctor confirmed two days ago that a tick bite I got 16 days ago has been infected with the Lyme disease bacteria. I am terrified and trying not to Google.

Dr is confident the strong antibiotics will kill the infection. In fact I only now feel rough because of them. Thank god I was vigilant in the first place.

Still scared though. DH is away most of June - in fact he doesnt seem to care much about this...work is bad for him.

Have a great weekend everyone. Might change back to my original MN name (thequietone) as I hate this one- it takes too long to type!

Frosch · 29/05/2009 14:57

Afternoon all...

Am back at home with the little yellow 'un. Am having visits from the hebamme, who has given me bag of sheep fleece to put on my cs scar; anyone heard of this?!?!

Oooh, indian food. Ernest has me drooling...

Abroad; there was a piece on Lyme Disease on BBC Breakfast yesterday, saying that antibiotics will blast it. The lady they featured took 10 years to be diagnosed, so at least you are on top of yours. DH doesn't care? Find a dead one and superglue it to his willy while he's asleep (I'm inspired by canella's post). He'll care.

Is ZZZen back from Japan?

Hooray for the alarm, MmeLindt! Is it complicated?

Frosch · 29/05/2009 15:00

Have just read last few pages properly; thank you for your good wishes!

canella · 01/06/2009 20:52

evening all!! just having a wee 10 mins on MN while watching bad tv!!

hope you all had lush weekends - we had a great one! the english speaking woman that i stalked in the shop a few weeks ago is back from her Kur so she invited us all round for brunch - they were a lovely family - could see us being good friends! and she's been living in this area for 4 years so is a font of all knowledge of what to do round here!

had a great day in Wuerzburg on sunday - thought of you loads mmelindt!!!!! wow it is a great city - the residenz is breathtaking! and the view from festung marienburg was amazing!!

just dossed about a bit today but went to a Flugplatz fest and was chuffed to see some people i knew! managed to make some plans for dd to play with her wee friend tomorrow! she's off to her grandparents again so just the ds to cope with from weds!!

hope you're all having good phingsten (?sp!!) holidays!

MmeLindt · 02/06/2009 13:28

Hi all.

Abroad
Don't worry about the Lyme Disease. From what I have heard, the important thing is that it is caught quickly and treated asap. Since you are already on antibiotics you should be fine.

Frosch
Never heard of the sheepskin stuff for CS scar. Who thinks up this stuff? Suppose it cannot do any harm.

Canella
I am not homesick for Wü at the moment as it is sooooo glorious here. Glad you enjoyed it. Did I tell you about Casa del Gusto? You have to go there for lunch next time you are in Wü. Absolutely fabulous food. Stunning. You don't get a choice, she makes a pasta dish or you can have salads or baguettes but the pasta dish is always so good that we always have it. It changes every day. We have been there at least 30x and have never had the same dish twice. Even a plain Spag Bol tastes amazing there, not often she does a known dish though.

MmeLindt · 02/06/2009 13:33

The alarm is up and running but they forgot to put a sensor in the office so we are not 100% secure at night. We had so many discussions about which company to go with (we wanted a differnet one to the guy at DH's work) and we are feeling slightly vindicated that the one that DH's colleague chose has been shite. Have to stop myself sending him an email saying, "nah nah nah nah nah, told you so"

Had our first false alarm this morning, DH forgot to turn it off when he got up. We were phoned within about 1 minute of the alarm sounding (which is when the car would have been sent to the house) so a pretty good response.

We had a great weekend. We were in Annecy and hired a motor boot for an hour or so. The lake there is lovely (Not Lake Geneva, Lac d'Annecy) but cold cold cold as DH and DD found when they went for a swim.

Hi, Some people will probably think I'm odd, but here goes....

My husband was posted out to near Hannover with the army, my son was born there but we have recently been forced back here

The thing is that I love Germany, German language, pretty much everything actually and I am heartbroken that we are back here.

Therefore I really want to teach my DS some more German, he's only 16 months but I feel that he was born there and I want to keep some German roots, plus I am hoping beyond hope we will get to move back in the future.

So how can I (a not great German speaker) encourage the DS, most of his toys are in German and I try and read German books to him but I think I need some native German in his life!

Please help!

abroadandmisunderstood · 03/06/2009 10:52

Thanks New and Mme. Only three more days of antibiotics left now. The infection appears to have gone now so I just have to ride out the awful pills.

How are you getting on in Munich, New? I have been here two years this August.

Ooooh and my DS2 took his first unaided steps this morning!!! So excited!

canella · 03/06/2009 11:07

welcome new!!! munich seems like such a nice place to live and so handy for getting to so many other gorgeous places!

abroad - congrats to your ds2 - its too exciting when they start to walk but then you remember that everything is in their reach now!! he's unstoppable!!

skattykatty - think you're doing a great job trying to get him to speak some german! how about getting a satellite dish & receiver and watching some german tv with him? we got one when we lived in the UK from Lidl and i'm sure it wasnt that expensive - we just had to pay someone to put it up!! then you could wathc it too and keep your german up (although i'm not the biggest fan of germn tv - too many bad crime programmes!!)

we had a lush afternoon in with another family in the village yesterday - she's not from the village either (from Wue) but has been here 6 years so a relative newcomer compared to the others!! she's also got 3 dc about the same age as mine so the kids had a great time!! really loving living in a wee village - think the kids are loving it more than me! their middle dd is coming round to play this afternoon with ds1 - his new girlfriend i think!!!
